iTunes won't install. error message: Windows Error 126

Geoffrey Salvage asked on

Original title: iTunes won't install...I'm not the only one apparently...

Dear Windows Community,

iTunes won't install.
I used to have it on my 64bit Sony laptop, but not any more.  Messages shown are: @AVFoundationCF.dll is missing' or 'cudt36.dll is missing' or 'Error 7 (Windows Error 126)'. 'iTunes can't start-up' etc. I have tried uninstalling and/or repairing iTunes, but nothing works.
I am reluctant to look at the registry etc as I am not that skilled. Any easy solutions that work please? Thanks.
Geoff

Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft community!

I am sorry to hear that you have problem installing the iTunes. As I understand that you get an error code Windows Error 126 while you are trying to install the iTunes. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Is the issue specific to iTunes?

I think, I found a solution (this helped me):

"OK I'VE GOT IT!!!! with the help of reading through the previous posts above.

heres what i did:

1. run the add/remove program (control panel).

2. uninstall ALL Apple programs (itunes says to start with itunes, then quick time, bonjour and then finally AMDS (apple mobile device support). you might have to close the add/remove program and open it again so that AMDS will not appear on the list.

3. RESTART/REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER!!!

4. go to itunes.com, download the newest version, save it to your desktop, RIGHT CLICK the icon and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR.

5. when itunes is done being installed, **DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT** click finish just yet.

6. plug in your device (iphone, ipod) to the USB cord, you'll see a window pop up in the lower right hand corner...that is your computer searching and installing the device driver.

7. after the driver is installed you can click FINISH on the itunes installer."

Tried all of these suggestions, several times, including 2 hours uninstalling everything using

Revo, no help.

Does anyone have a fix that works?

Thank you, maciejc!

First, I dragged all the .dll files out of both iTunes folders in the Program files, onto the desktop.
Then I dragged the .dll files to the trash and emptied the Trash.

Finally, I uninstalled all the apple products.  (had to do this twice; they came back the first time!)
Restarted my laptop. (Asus running Windows 7)
Downloaded iTunes for Windows 64bit.
Installed iTunes and it finally opened without an error message.

There are several fixes offered, but yours was the clearest to read and follow.

If I have to re-install iTunes will I have to re-install all the music that I have downloaded?

Nope, uninstalling iTunes and getting a new version doesn't affect your music collection, as long as you have it saved to the music library.  To reassure yourself, look in your files to see all the songs iTunes uses.  Look in [Your User Name] > My Music > iTunes > iTunes Media.  These music files aren't in the iTunes  folder that's in your Programs Files , i.e. not one of the  files you drag to the trash, and not what you uninstall.
