I did an upgrade install on my laptop from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional and everything works fine, except the Network System Icon has disappeared. This is the case, even though I am connected via Ethernet to the Internet without a problem
and the Icon is checked as "on" in the System Icon dialog box. I have also done a REpair Install (several times) of Windows 7, which has not solved the problem. (This was NOT a problem with Vista.)
