Question

Windows 7 download file sizes from Digital River

I purchased the student version of Win 7 Home Premium 32-bit for download from Digital River.  The file size of both the .EXE and .ISO files are both 347KB, rather than between 2GB and 3 GB.

Can anyone tell me what these files are (or are they invalid install files), or if these files are actually download managers for the actual Win 7 install files?

(Digital River's FAQs refers to the listed files as "install files" for the actual Win 7 software, which I believe cannot be possible!)

Call Digital River and tell them you want to download the full .ISO file (not the .exe) and use the ISO to create a bootable Windows 7 DVD.

Download the ISO Image of Windows 7

Hi JW.  Thanks for your suggestion about contacting Digital River.  As I feared, their customer service staff at this toll-free number are not at all helpful in solving problems, nor answering the questions I posed above.  I was not successful in getting them to provide me the full Win 7 Install File.

Fortunately or unfortunately I also ordered the DVD from Digital River (when I purchased the download), but I'm told after-the-fact that it only contains the 32-bit version of Win7, so I have no option to install the 64-bit version instead (IF I believe the 4GB RAM management, and speed, of the 64-bit version outweighs the "clean install" hassles, and the compatibility issues with some 32-bit software).

Furthermore, altho the Microsoft Store can apparently provide a DVD with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions on it (if you order by phone @ 1-866-MY-MS-STORE), it's not possible for Canadians to order this DVD.  Their only option is to download these "mini-files" from Digital River (exclusively 32-bit or 64-bit, not both, even if you order the DVD).  For a multi-national corporation, MS seems to always make it more difficult (and significantly more expensive) -- if not impossible -- for Canadians to buy the same MS products (& options) that customers in the USA can buy.  (FYI, even the "Technical Assistance" staff at the MS Store toll-free phone number could not answer the questions in my original post.  They admitted they had no technical support training.  And, there is no Canadian version of the Microsoft Store, despite their suggestion that I phone Microsoft Canada.)

Sigh...

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

It is not possible for anyone outside the US to buy from the MS Store. This is to prevent fraud.

@Frenchie   I've never tried to purchase other products directly from the MS Store, as a Canadian.  The reason why I couldn't in this case is because it was the Win 7 upgrade Student Offer.  In order to be eligible to buy at the US-based MS Store, my school e-mail address had to be from a US College or University, which wasn't the case, of course.

Since there isn't a Canada-based MS Store, I was unable to buy the same DVD a US student could get at the US-based MS Store.  That only left me with an online purchase from Digital River, unfortunately.

@JW   Thanks for the links.  However, if I've purchased a Win 7 Hm Prem 32-bit upgrade, the key I received won't work on the 64-bit version, will it?  (Forgot to mention before that Digital River has never answered any of the several messages I sent on their "support" webpage.)

THe key is good for both the 32 and 64-Bit versions of Windows 7 Home Prem.

It will not work on other versions such as Professional or Ultimate.

Thanks again JS.  Most appreciated!  It astounds me that customers are not given the answers or info needed by the product VENDOR.

These forums, populated with helpful (and patient) people like you, make life SO much easier (plus we actually get the info/answers we need!  and quickly!)

This is especially useful when trying to deal with the Microsoft "Beast" (or should I say "black hole"?) and/or its large resellers/providers.
