Upgrading Windows XP 32 Bit to Windows 7 64 Bit

I am currently trying to upgrade my Dell Precision M90 notebook from Windows xp 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit.  I know that my computer is capable of running the 64 bit version but when I try to install Windows 7.....an error message pops up and will not allow me to upgrade.  Interestingly when I tried to upgrade to the 32 bit Windows 7, my computer recognized the setup and would allow me to upgrade.  Unfortunately I do not want to use the 32 bit version so upgrading to that version of windows 7 will do me know good.  Is there anything that I have to download for my computer in order for it to recognize the 64 bit installation set up?

When you do an Upgrade to 64 bit, it is an upgrade only by verifying the previous version of the activated OS. It needs to be an Upgrade with a Custom install. Your hard drive will be cleaned so you will need to backup and/or make sure you can recover files. I assume you have a retail version of Win 7 that comes with 2 disks of the 32 and 64 bit. There is no additional software needed.

What you should do is uninstall the current win 7 and do a custom install to 64 bit.
