How do I retrieve my certificate of authenticity?

How do I retrieve my certificate of authenticity which was located under the laptop? It is incomplete now since it was peeling off and blurry because of the heat.  Planning to do a fresh install on the same laptop. Don't want to buy another copy of windows 7 since this laptop came pre installed with it.

If your certificate of authenticity is worn out or damaged, you need to contact the manufacturer of your laptop for a replacement product key.

New computers that come preinstalled with Windows 7 often have what is called a recovery partition. This is used to reinstall the operating system in the event of a system crash. To access it, you will need to boot into when you start your computer by pressing a function key. This can be either F1, F2, F9, F10, F11, F12 or even DEL or Tab key. Consult the owners manual that came with your PC for instructions about how to reinstall Windows.

If your recovery partition is not available or damaged, you should contact the manufacturer of your computer and request a recovery disc set you can use to reinstall Windows 7. They might charge a small shipping and handling fee.

Reinstalling from the recovery partition would automatically selft activate the license so you would not need to reference the product key from the sticker.

Computers, which are built by large manufactures that come with Windows Pre-Installed, come with two (2) Product Keys:

A) OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the OEM Bios Flag found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Windows looks at the motherboard and sees the proper OEM Bios Flag (for that Manufacturer and that version of Windows) and Self-Activates. (that's why you did not need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)

B) COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side (or bottom) of your computer. It is a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations (sush as if the OEM SLP key stops self-activating for whatever reason). The key must be activated by Phone. (Note: All manufacturers that use the OEM SLP system are required by contract to include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker, that has a COA SLP key, on the computer)

If the Windows 7 is still "running" you can use Magic Jelly Bean keyfinder so as to see the current "installed" product key.

However, you have stated that this computer is a laptop and therefore it is a "branded" computer.  A lot of "name brand" computer manufacturers can use 2 product keys:

1) A mass install product key which Microsoft allows.  This is for producing a "large" quantity of computers for sales

2) A individual product key that is needed for  every "re-install" of Windows 7 by the "user" of the computer.
