Windows 7 Startup repair fails to fix a corrupt file

Hi,

My Windows 7 laptop (64 bit) failed to boot and System Repair could not correct it. It says the issue is due to a Corrupt file. My laptop was originally on Vista so the HP system restore would only restore to the Vista version. I lost my Win 7 CD (and key), but have the Win 7 SP1 CD I bought for my other laptop.

I tried the Windows System Restore to restore the PC to a restore point from earlier. But this did not fix the problem.

Please help in resolving this issue.

Hi,

I understand that you have lost Windows 7 disk and the product key. I would suggest you to arrange a Windows 7 disc and follow the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the below link.

You can try startup repair from Windows Recovery Environment and check if it helps. You doesn’t need a disc to perform this action.

Startup Repair: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/startup-repair

You can use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) to troubleshoot and repair the following items in Windows Vista or Windows 7:

·         A master boot record (MBR)

·         A boot sector

·         A Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps:

a)    Put the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.

b)    Press a key when you are prompted.

c)    Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.

d)    Click Repair your computer.

e)    Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

f)     In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

g)    Type bootrec /RebuildBcd, and then press ENTER.

Refer the link for more information: How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows:

Now check if the above steps help you to fix the issue.

Regards.
