Question

Windows 7 Blue Screen 0X000000FE [BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER]

**Original Title**
Windows 7 - Blue Screen of Death Issue

I just got a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, with Windows 7 Home Premium. I get the blue screen of death [BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER] every time I try and connect my iPod or my Sony DSC-H50 digital camera. Yet my generic mouse works just fine. It says all the drivers are up to date, and I'm at my wits end. I've gone through multiple forums and tried multiple things, and nothing has worked.

Any help?

Answer

The minidump files showed a BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER (fe) stop error referencing the usbhub.sys however no third party driver was named as being involved  the crash.

Since 3 of the USB ports are not working would tend to indicate a hardware problem.

You may want to run the system file checker to check for system file corruption - follow Option Two in the following link:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

But it may be the problem is hardware related.

Can you zip up the minidump files in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and make available (provide link) via Windows Live SkyDrive or similar site?

The following link has information on using Windows Live SkyDrive:

And this is the last code I saw from the BSoD

That is the same error that showed up in all the minidump files.

However no third party driver was named as causing the crashes.

Can you provide some more info on the computer?:

Start > type msinfo32 in the "Search programs and files" box and press "Enter" > File > Save > then save as an .nfo file

Then make the resulting .nfo file available via Windows Live SkyDrive.

We need a little more info from the machine please.

Please run the following steps:
1) Go to Control Panel -> System and Security -> System and click on "Advanced system settings"
2) Under startup and recovery, click the Settings button
3) In the dropdown box under "write debugging information", select "Kernel Memory Dump".
4) Reboot your system.

Then please attach the devices in an attempt to get a crash again.  This time, the file it creates will be in c:\windows and will be named Memory.dmp.  It will be a large file.  Copy that file to another directory, then right click on it to send it to a compressed folder.

Then please upload that file to your skydrive share.

Thanks,
Mark

I don't think it's going to allow me to. It's been "uploading" for almost 20 minutes now, and the .zip file is 116 MB, but the note at the bottom of the uploader page says the max file size is 50 MB. Is there somewhere else that will let me upload a .zip file that large? In the mean time I'll let the "uploading" page keep sitting there, but you'd think it would have given me some kind of notice by now if the file was too big.

Can you compress the file, and if necessary split it up, with an application such as WinRAR?

How can I split it up? None of the programs on my laptop even open the file.

You would need a third party application such as WinZip or WinRAR to split the file into smaller segments less than 50 MB.

Here's a link for WinRAR:

http://www.win-rar.com/splitarchive.html

Both applications have functional trial versions.

If you want open the dump file yourself you will need a debugger such as WinDbg of the Debugging Tools for Windows.

You can download the Debugging Tools for Windows from the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx

There is a tutorial in the following link on setting up WinDbg, such as setting the symbol path and utilizing the !analyze -v command:

http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/26584-2-intermediate-configuring-debugging-tools.html

To get a list of drivers loaded at the time of the crash run the lmtn command.
