Question

how to determine why windows 7 backup failed?

trying to do a windows 7 backup to a usb drive. It fails whether I am logged in as a user or admin. "Windows backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes being backed up. Please check in the event log for any relevant errors." Error code 0x81000037.  In the event viewer I see a lot of messages. I don't see anything backup related.

Why would the backup be failing? Where to look in the event viewer for the error message?

The day before I used this USB drive to backup a windows server. So I am sure it is working.

thanks,

thanks for the reply. The first link sends me to a microsoft support page that says to run "dir /AL /S"   I run that and get hundreds of results. I don't understand what to do with that info. If it says I have a junction from the C: drive to the backup drive, how to filter out the dir /AL /S results to see only those links?

You can create a text file with all the entries as follows:

1) Click on Start and type CMD in search bar

2) Right click on the cmd.exe entry in the "Programs (1)" list and select "Run as administrator"

3) At the command prompt which will be: C:\Windows\system32>    enter the commands listed below.
3a) C:\Windows\system32> CD C:\users   and press the enter key
3b) Next enter:  dir   and press enter
one of the entries in the list will be your account name, example: My Name
3c) now enter: CD "My name"   and press enter

4) The command line prompt should now be:  C:\Users\My Name:   where 'My Name' represents your account name.
5) Now enter the following at the prompt:  dir  /al  /s  >  C:\Results.txt

6) Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\    you should see the "Results.txt" file you just created.

7) use the content of this file to locate the junction points to the backup drive. These are most likely the cause of your error, trying to backup files on the USB drive to the USB drive.

I am not seeing any links to the USB drive. ( did a search of the text file for e: )  But I do see junctions in user directories for users who no longer exist. ( I recently changed this PC from a  domain to a  workgroup ). Also there is a copy of a c:\windows directory from a prior install named windows.old . So I deleted all of that and now there are many fewer links. Running the backup again ...

ok. backup completed successfully. The solution was to delete the directories in the c:\users folder that were used by users when the PC was in a domain. ( now it is in a workgroup ). I also deleted the directory named windows.old that contained the c:\windows directory from a prior install of the OS.
