Answer

Hi,

I found one more thing I've changed.. I think this is the key..

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Audio]
"DisableProtectedAudioDG"=dword:00000000

After this reboot.

Hi Timnshaz,

Are you able to play other files in media player?

You may try the below methods one by one and check.

Method 1: You might try re-register wmp.dll file related to Windows Media Player and check.
1.      Click Start>> click on All Programs >> click on Accessories >> right click on Command Prompt>> click on Run as  Administrator.
2.      Type "regsvr32 wmp.dll" without the quotes.
3.      Hit OK to the prompt and restart your computer afterwards.

Now check if Windows Media Player is working without any issues.

Method 2: If the issue still persists, you may try installing the codec’s from the link below:
Codec Installation Package: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=06fcaab7-dcc9-466b-b0c4-04db144bb601&displaylang=en
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Codecs-frequently-asked-questions

Method 3: Reinstall windows media player.

1.      Close all programs.
2.      Click Start button, and then click Control Panel.
3.      Under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
4.      In the tasks pane, click Turn Windows features on or off.
5.      In the list of windows features, click on plus sign next to Media Features.
6.      Under Media Features clear the check mark next to Windows Media Player.
6.      You receive a warning message in a pop-up window. Click Yes.
7.      Now restart the computer and then go to Turn Windows features on or off features. Place a check mark for Windows Media Player. You receive a warning message in a pop-up window. Click Yes.
8.      Restart your computer.

Check for error messages in event viewer. If you find any error messages then post back the exact error message so that we can help you better.

Steps to check Application Event log:

1. Click on start.
2. In the search box type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
3. Now click on Application under Event Viewer (local).
4. Now look for event log on right hand side of the Event Viewer windows.

For more information visit the below links:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-Event-Viewer

Hope this information is helpful.

Hi Umesh

Thanks for your reply to my problem

Method 1 did not help
Method 2 could not be completed because the codec pack listed could not be installed with wmp12
Method 3 did not help

Event log - I am not sure what I am looking for here - I have seen one entry in the system log that might be relevent:

The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto Discovery Service service entered the stopped state.

This occurs with a few other bits of information about the time that I tried to open the wma file with WMP.

A bit more information for you - I had read somewhere that if the system had been installed from an image (as my computer probably has as it was purchased from meshcomputers) the DRM might not work. I downloaded a test wma file from the microsoft web site STC1_128_44_16_2_CBR.wma and this did not play. So I tried running the reset DRM tool but this did not help - the sample file would not play and still will not play. The first time I tried to play a downloaded nokia file after running this tool a pop up window to nokia appeared asking for password and user name which I entered but this was not recognised for some reason - I tried twice and then cancelled. The next time I tried to play the file the original error appeared:-

Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file

I tried opening the Nokia file using Nokia OVI player and it had to update licence information but then played.

So the situation is back to how it was before.

I have just tried downloading winamp and after installation this can play the Nokia files and the sample Microsoft track but still media player won't!

Any more ideas?

Thanks

Tim

Umesh,

I have the same issue as Tim. I am able to play WMA files in Media Centre / Media Player except for Nokia Comes with Music downloads. These downloads play fine using Ovi Music (from Nokia) and other 3rd party software such as Nero Showtime.

I have been able to play these files on a previous computer with Vista Media Centre.

Thanks for your help.

Warren.

I'm having the exact same problem! please help. WMP12 doesn't play the files from Nokia Ovi Store or from Zune. I tested with STC1_128_44_16_2_CBR.wma as suggested in some page and that doesn't work I've tried to clean my DRM cache but that doesn't help either.

Here technical details from my WMP 12 and from my Win7. I'm running 64bit rtm from msdn.

Hi,

I think I got it working with next registery hack.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences]
"DisableMRUMusic"=dword:00000000
"DisableMRUPictures"=dword:00000000
"DisableMRUVideo"=dword:00000000
"DisableMRUPlaylists"=dword:00000000
"EnableWMPDMR"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\HardwareMFT]
"EnableDecoders"=dword:00000001
"EnableEncoders"=dword:00000001
"EnableVideoProcessors"=dword:00000001

Not sure if thats all but thats the only thing I was able to pinpoint what did I do to make it work :) So please if some one could confirm this to the others.

Hi RistoA

I tried your registry "tweek" but it did not work.

The entry: "EnableWMPDMR"=dword:00000001 was on my machine set to 0. After changing it to 1 the issue remained and when I returned to regedit this entry had been reset to 0.

Perhaps there is something else that you have done not listed above?

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim,

I think that EnableDecoders did the trick. There were also couple of DRM related values under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media NSS\3.0\ but after I changed those those changed back to 0. Also note that after I changed those values in ealier post I rebooted. It might also help to kill the mediaplayer and change the settings after that. Can you make registry export from those two locations and also add this HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media NSS\ I can then compare those and see if there are any differences.

Here are the exports, also how do you display all of your windows media player info above?

Under NSS I noticed that some of the entries have

 "DRMCapable"=dword:00000000 - I wonder if this is relevant?

Was this helpful?

Hi,

In my testing earlier I had that EnableDecoders"=dword:00000001 set to 0 after chaching it to 1 after some other hacking the music playback started working. I also changed all those DRMCapable from 0 to 1 and FunctionalDMR to 1. I'm working now so cant compare but I'll do that right away after I get home.

Risto
