Question

Phantom Playlists in WMP 12 (Win7 Ultimate RTM bits, x64)

I have over 100 Playlists showing in WMP 12.  I am unable to delete them.  I am unable to locate the file location.  I am unable to play them or open them.

I want them gone.

I have literally deleted all .wpl and all .zpl files from my PC (and moved them to an SD Card for possible future recovery....though doubtful).

I need to know how to remove these playlists from WMP12.  Also, some show up on my Xbox360.

Answer

Hi Russelb - SLG,

Important:  This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

You can clear the Windows Media Player database. To do this, follow these steps:

1.     Exit Windows Media Player.

2.     Click Start, click Run, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player, and then click OK.

3.     Select all the files in the folder, and then click Delete on the File menu.
Note You do not have to delete the folders that are in this folder.

4.     Restart Windows Media Player.
Note Windows Media Player automatically rebuilds the database.

If this does not resolve the problem, clear the Windows Media Player database cache files. To do this, follow these steps:

1.     Exit Windows Media Player.

2.     If you are running Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft, and then click OK.

If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, click Run, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft, and then click OK.

3.     Select the Media Player folder, and then click Delete on the File menu.

4.     Restart Windows Media Player.
Note Windows Media Player automatically rebuilds the database.

 Hope this information is helpful.

Let me know if this worked.

Thanks and Regards:

Didn't work for Windows7. I got an error message that the location could not be found.  I tried searching the Registry for Media Player possibilities, but could not figure out what I should be deleting.  Any other ideas?

Thanks for trying,

Barb

I was getting the error message "could not initialize playlist" when I was using DLNA on my Win7 64bit streaming to TV. After deleting the files, I was able to stream the movie. I just entered the run %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player and deleted the files and it worked.

Thanks!
