Question

Microphone delay when recording in Windows 7

Since upgrading from Vista to Win7, my microphone input has a delay of 500ms to 1s when recording.  This is most notable in apps like Ventrilo.  Anyone else having this problem?

Answer

Hi Everyone,

Please see my earlier replies. No functionality has been removed in Windows 7. If you have an audio driver and codec that exposes the hardware loopback, it will still be present on the Levels tab of the Speakers device. However, not all drivers expose this. If you had this option on XP and load the same audio driver, it should be exposed on Windows 7. Same with the stereo mixer. If the audio driver exposes it, it will be available. It is hidden by default on Vista/Windows 7. But on the Recording tab if you right click in the open area and select show disabled devices, you can enable it. If a Stereo Mix device is not shown, then the audio driver is not exposing one. If you had this option on XP, then please try installing the same driver version that was previously installed.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi gtfyre,

Thank you for visiting Windows 7 community.

This should be a driver issue. The driver update may not be installed properly. I suggest that you remove the driver, and then run Windows Update to install it again.

How to remove.

1. Click Start. In the Start Search box type "devmgmt.msc" and press Enter.
2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers", double-click on the entry of the sound card.
3. Click the tab "Driver", click "Uninstall".
4. Click Start. In the Start Search box type "appwiz.cpl" and press Enter.
5. Remove the entries related to the display adapter.

Then, I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus, then run Windows Update to install the audio driver.

Also open the recording audio troubleshooter and check if it fixes the problem.

Open the Record Sound troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio recording. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

This problem still persists.  I've installed the latest Realtek driver.  I've tried going through Asus' site to get the latest for the onboard controller and was able to get my realtek sound card working, but the delay persists.  It stinks for recording because there is a delay and it makes it impossible to time things right.

I've also tried the steps outlined above but the problem remains.

I've disabled all the enhancements on the sound device, I've set "immediate mode" both on the mic and on the sound device and it is still delaying.  This is a major issue for me as half of what I do with my PC involves recording sound input.

I am having the exact same problem on my new Asus laptop with Win7.  Terrible latency when recording any audio...also, 50% of the time my audio recording software crashes as soon as I press the record button...happens with Sound Forge, Acid, and Audacity.  Extremely frustrating!!! If anyone has answers, please share!

HI all
I have same problem, I'm working on windows 7 32 bit and I tried 2 different audio cards (SB Live 24 and nvidia audio), so I'm sure that it isn't a driver problem, (on vista it's ok.) I tried to set all the options on audio settings panel but I have same f@ked 500ms delay.
many ideas to fix it?

Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro and Sonar responding the same way with various audio devices both PCI and USB.  This is not a driver.  This is an OS issue.

I've been having the same issues with recording too, but I would like to add, for you Microsoft troubleshooting  guys, that it isn't just the recording. The problem also shows itself in the live signal to the speakers. When I tap the mic I can very noticeable here the time delay before the sound comes out of the speakers. Very frustrating for all of us in the music world.

I'm having the same problem. Still no solution in Windows 7. Probably I'll have to use chrisnix "hotfix"...

I am having this problem as well. I tried my usb mic and my regular mic pluged into the on-board soundcard as well as a pci sound card. Still a delay of 1/2 to 1 second. I paid $120 for windows 7 and it has just crippled my recording ability. I hope microsoft can address this soon.
