Windows 7 Gadgets
That is, some Windows 7 gadgets -- the Clock in particular -- just disappear from one's desktop. Gerry speculated that a recent security update disabled the Windows 7 Clock gadget as a potential risk. I've also noticed that although a weather gadget remains, its visual appearance has been changed. Or perhaps the old weather gadget has been replaced by a new one.
I started this discussion because I then noticed that you can "View list of running gadgets" (this is supposedly somewhere in Control Panel, but I can't see it there -- it shows up if you search "Gadget"). The list shows "Clock" as still running -- even though it doesn't display. And if you repeatedly attempt to add the Clock gadget to your desktop, the list of running gadgets shows multiple instances of Clock running.
So ... if the Clock gadget was disabled because MS considers it to be a security risk, why is it still running in the background even though it isn't displaying? Isn't now just a hidden -- and therefore worse -- risk?
Although I haven't drilled down too deeply, you can see the amount of memory assigned to sidebar.exe increase and decrease depending on whether "Clock 1.0.0.0" is running or not. If Clock is the only gadget that has been dragged to the Desktop (even though it doesn't show), sidebar.exe continues to run. When Clock is then "removed" from the Desktop by using "View list of running gadgets," sidebar.exe closes.

This has nothing to do with the general deprecation of gadgets on security grounds.
The recent problems with gadgets seem to be linked to the upgrade of Internet Explorer to v.11. This version of the browser seems to be particularly sensitive to display options, and if the screen DPI is set to anything other than 100%, some things - including
gadgets - may be prone to display faults.
Use display options in Control Panel to reset the screen DPI to 100% to test this hypothesis. If your gadgets are resurrected, you'll have to decide which is more important - higher DPI or functioning gadgets. Mine all work properly at 105% DPI. You could also
uninstall the IE11 update to restore your previous version pending a potential improvement in a later update.
There's plenty of discussion in the IE forum, so this thread might just as well stay here to spread the message.

This is where my original advice regarding discontinuance of Gadgets came from:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/gadgets
I am not sure when this advice regarding Gadget was issued but I imagine it predates the advice in my previous link:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/pc-security/gadgets.aspx
Microsoft Security Advisory (2719662)
Vulnerabilities in Gadgets Could Allow Remote Code Execution
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-GB/security/advisory/2719662
If you place a Gadget in the top right corner of the Desktop you could accidentally close the Gadget because of its proximity to the Close button for maximised open windows. It makes sense to minimise the risk of accidental closure by placing Gadgets elsewhere on the Desktop.

Pretty soon it was clear that those problems were tied to the IE upgrade, exactly like Noel is saying.
In the above-mentioned link I posted another "work-around" to resolve the issue for individual gadgets without having to modify the system's DPI setting in the process.

I'm not quite sure which one you're referring to. I use a couple from
addgadgets.com, one of which shows both CPU and RAM usage by core along with core temperature - useful for telling me when it's time to blow out my laptop vents:
And - as I say - all working flawlessly after the upgrade to IE 11, including Weather.

The DPI option is no solution for me, and I suspect many others will feel the same. You then need a magnifying glass to read the text under Desktop icons! I see reverting from Internet Explorer 11 to 10 as a retrograde step so I will not being that. Simpler to just replace the missing gadget from another source.

The font, size, colour and style of text under desktop icons is separately configurable using Personalization in Control Panel.

Having devoted quite a bit of time to create a sensible balance on my dual monitors I am not keen to mess around to hang on to one or two replaceable gadgets.

I've never had a problem with sidebar gadgets. When I first read on the Microsoft website "Gadgets are no longer available on our website because the Windows Sidebar platform in Windows 7 and Windows Vista has "serious vulnerabilities." That came as I surprise to me. Also, I'm trying to avoid IE 11 at all costs because of dozens of compatibility issues and the 32-bit tab glitch, so I probably wouldn't have noticed any IE/sidebar issues. But, I just went ahead and applied the fixit to my PC since 3 other win7 PCs in the house also have the weather gadget for my town, which is the only gadget I have actually used. (that doesn't mean I haven't tried the other ones included in Windows, although I never downloaded any gadgets)

This Has Nothing to Do with IE 11 or Software Update I have IE 11 and all recent updates installed yet all the built in gadgets work properly have you ever checked if the gadget feature is on the program and features in the control panel? scan your computer for malware maybe that Is the reason. If you want to disable gadgets go to Control panel> Programs and features> Turn windows features on or off (requires admin permission) And Uncheck Windows Gadget Platform. Then Apply Do the process again and check if the clock thingy has started to work properly.
BTW: It has Nothing to do with Microsoft disabling gadgets in Windows 8; In Windows Vista/7, Gadgets are already built in, Microsoft gave you the freedom to disable them and run them when you wish, they have done their job and warned you about security but now it is your own choice whether to stop them or not.

I have read all the above with great interest. As all the way through Vista and all the way through windows 7 I have had a clock (gadget) that came with the respective OS .
on the top right hand corner of desktop no issues at all
Windows 8.1 desktop no clock ? who gets stick and opens a cupboard to get the time?
(Move your mouse far right of screen to get sidebar and time will pop up) look were your going most people do watch what there mouse pointer is doing and were it goes? (and time pops up on the opposite side (watch tennis ))
to me a clock is something that you glance at to get a look at the time. most people I know (song) have a watch on there wrist they don't hide it or put it in a draw. then go looking for it to find the time
windows 8.1 go to " adjust date/time "
Date and time well well well look at that a """ analog clock "" with a big hand a minute hand and a sweeping second hand.????????? working
So why cant we have a analog clock on the desktop
made by Microsoft to work with windows 8.1 (it already there)
that is all the workings scripts ect are there in the os
