I just updated (no change) then uninstalled McAfee and problem fixed.
To get your pictures back select your Pictures folder and right ckick it to get Properties. Select hiddden and press Apply (do not press OK) to hide all items. The folder will disappear but now untick " Hidden" and Apply to all again and they all come back. Voila.
You might also like to know there is a tool that will restore hidden files and folders in all document folders. It is called unhide.exe and you can get it from Bleeping Computer. It is intended to undo virus damage. It is not necessary with this problem but may be useful to some of you.
If you have mcafee installed you might want to look into this thread,

Hello, Tammy
Does this only affect pictures in a specific folder or all of them?
If it’s just a specific folder, what folder is it?
Try saving a picture to the desktop and test.
Hi there, I've also been experiencing this problem.
It happens in the "my pictures" folder and in a brand new folder on my desktop. When I've rotated the photo and then unhide it, if I try to rotate it again it goes back to being a hidden file. I've been into "folders options" in control panel but can't seem to find anything to stop this from happening. Does anyone know of a fix yet?!?!
I've tried what you said above and it hasn't been working :S
any other solutions!?
Thumbnails,
Open your my pictures location, click on organize on the top left side, click on the folder and search options, click the view tab and uncheck the top option, always show icons and never thumbnails, and also scroll down and check show hidden folders, files and drives, select apply and save.
Return to your my pictures location, change the view of the page on the top right side next to the question mark symbol, there is another symbol with a drop down symbol, click it and select medium or large icons from the listed options.
Does it still hide the edited photos after you change the settings,
