No 5.1 audio in Windows 7 64bit with nvidia GT240 HDMI to HDTV with Windows Media Center

I have a new Home Theater Personal Computer that uses a EVGA nvidia GT 240.  This video adapter has nvidia's HD Audio.  I have installed the latest drivers from nvidia 260.99.  I connect it to a Toshiba 47LX196 receiver per nvidia's instructions.  The audio setup will only allow me to use stereo.  I know the TV accepts 5.1 because over the same HDMI I get 5.1 with Blu-ray and HD.DVD players, Sony PS3 and satellite dish receivers.

EVGA technical support says this is because Microsoft dropped support for "direct audio" after Windows XP SP2, and that stereo is the only possible audio with Windows 7.  I am very unhappy that this new HTPC will not send 5.1 to the TV, is there any thing I can do?
