Decoder Error, the video recorder is not working, is not installed, or is not supported.

  Decoder Error

I'm trying to playback a TV show I recorded using Windows Media Center, Windows 7 Home Premium.  Haven't had this problem before. Get this error message today. Decoder Error, the video recorder is not working, is not installed, or is not supported.  Try installing the codec or restarting the computer

Restarted computer - didn't work. I assume something changed with last auto Windows update. I tried restoring to previous restore point with no luck.

I assume something went wrong with the existing codec. How can I fix this?  Is there a download through Microsoft to update or fix the codec?

Do you experience the same with  WMP and Live TV also?

I'm getting this error also when trying to Watch Live TV or playback recorded TV in Windows Media Center (WMC).  In Windows Media Player (WMP) I can playback the same recorded TV (.wtv) files without an issue.  I first noticed this issue on October 11th, and after using AVS forums (http://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-home-theater-computers/1718946-decoder-error-windows-media-center-windows-7-a.html#post28163418)  to troubleshoot it someone else posted that they observed the same exact problem starting on October 11th also.  They were using a different TV tuner then I am.  Fortunately for them they had a meaningful system restore point and rolling back to it resolved the issue (I don't have a meaning system restore point).  It seems highly likely this issue is being caused by a Windows Update.  I'm running Windows 7 Professional with SP1.  Here is my error message along with my current codec information:

Error Message:

Is there a windows update or hotfix available to fix this issue which has seemingly affected multiple people at the same time?

With any windows OS,running sfc utility will/should fix it.

Simply open cmd,type:  Sfc /Scannow  Once its thru,type: CHKDSK C: /F

Agree,type: EXIT  Restart pc

Also, download & run, WMDiag  from Microsoft,it runs diagnostics on WMP

Thank you for the suggestions.  I had already run sfc /scannow previously but ran it again anyhow.  Now and previously I didn't receive any errors.  I'm not sure I caught everything that CHKDSK printed but I didn't notice any errors.  I ran WMDiag even though it doesn't say it's for Windows 7 online (only older OS's are listed under System Requirements).  It ran though and created a folder with a number of .txt files.  I looked through a couple of them but I'm not sure what to key in on.  Given the error, decoder error - presumably Windows Media Center can't access the Media Foundation Codecs but Windows Media Player can - would you suggest looking/searching a particular file for a particular error/term?

Since nothing else worked I ended up doing a Windows repair (upgrade) install.  This fixed the issue.
