Question

windows 7 does not shutdown properly after bitlocker encryption

Hi All,

Recently I was trying BitLocker drive encryption. I have encrypted my C drive where windows 7 is installed and boot from. Immediately I noticed that windows 7 does not power off properly.

When I do shutdown from start menu, it goes through the shutdown process but does not power off. on my laptop battery light stays on, power light stays on and light on my power button stays on.

Earlier when I did not have Bitlocker, it was powering off properly with all the lights off.

One more thing I noticed is that, when I do hard shutdown (keep pressing power button for few seconds) and start my laptop again, it DOES NOT complain that earlier shutdown was abrupt.

Does any one encounter this problem? I am using windows 7 Ultimate RC with latest patches on Acer Extensa 4420-5239.

Bug has been filed. I think I know what the problem is but it's nothing an end-user can fix.

I do have the same problem with Windows 7 64bit, Build 7100. It started right after I encrypted my system partition with BitLocker.

Exactly the same symptoms. It appears as if the notebook has been shut down (black screen), but the battery LED is still on, and eventually the fan starts spinning after a few minutes.

Notebook is a Lenovo T61p

I have the same problem with the Windows 7 Enterpise RTM x64. Is there a way I can track the bug, so I know when a hotfix is available?

Thanks,

Colin

I'm sorry, with "if i restart computer before shutdown it" you mean shutdown works if computer is shutted down right after a reboot?
I've tried that, with two computers, one seldom follows this behaviour, the other does not.

Yes, when I shutdown the computer after a restart, in 5 minutes, shutdown works very well and my computer is completely turned off (no lights on).

If It stays on for long time (I don’t know how much), when I shutdown, the computer closes properly (I can see that in event viewer), but it doesn’t turn off. (light remains on).

Thanks EF. I've been able to replicate this on one laptop only (dell e820). Other (toshiba portege M750) won't turn off after shutdown even with reboot.
I hope in a fix.
