User gets a "Windows Logon User Interface Host has stopped working" when unlocking laptop

Hi all,

 

I currently have a user with a Dell Latitude E5420 running Windows 7 Professional recieving this error message:

 

"Windows Logon User Interface Host has stopped working

Files that help describe the problem:
  C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\AppCrash_LogonUI.exe_5d18aa2fa4622c5ac97134c7980126b5dc4984e_cab_06d9628c\WER5208.tmp.appcompat.txt
  C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\AppCrash_LogonUI.exe_5d18aa2fa4622c5ac97134c7980126b5dc4984e_cab_06d9628c\WER5219.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
  C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\AppCrash_LogonUI.exe_5d18aa2fa4622c5ac97134c7980126b5dc4984e_cab_06d9628c\WER5268.tmp.hdmp"

This happens after the machine enters sleep mode, hibernate or is locked. When trying to unlock the laptop it would go to a black screen and sit there with nothing but the mouse icon on the desktop, which you then have to do ctrl+alt+delete again to get to the unlock page to log in again.

The above message follows once the user is in their session.

I'd rather not do a system restore and would appreciate an assist with this issue.

1. Is the computer connected to a domain?

2. Have you made any recent software or hardware changes on the system?

 

This can happen if the computer is running out of memory. Perform a Clean boot and remove any unneeded programs.

You may try performing a clean boot to check for the issue.

A clean boot helps to verify if any third party application services or startup item is causing this issue.

Note: Make sure you put the computer back to Normal Startup once you are done with the troubleshooting.

 

Method 2:

You may also try running an SFC scan and check for the issue.
