I am getting these errors when triyng to create an image to drive letter D: any help would be appreciated.
original title: 0x8078002A and I/O device error(0x8007045D)
Found this on the Western Digital page. Trying it now will let you all know if it works or not? Fingers crossed
Error: 0x8078002A occurs when backing up to a 2.5 or 3.0 TB drive in Windows 7 Backup and Restore
Problem:
When using Windows 7 Backup and Restore with a 2.5 TB or 3.0 TB drive, the backup fails with an error code of (0x8078002A).
Cause:
This problem is caused by an issue with the Windows 7 Backup and Restore utility when using drives with 4K Logical sector sizes, which are found on WD 2.5 TB and larger external drives. This is different from an "Advanced Format" (AFD) drive which use 4K physical
sector sizes. AFD drives should not cause this problem.
Solution:
It is still possible to use a 2.5 TB drive or larger with Windows 7 Backup and Restore, as long as you don't need to use the drive with Windows XP. Using the WD Quick Formatter tool, select the
Factory Default configuration to reformat the drive.
Warning: This tool will erase all data on your drive, so take the necessary precautions.
After formatting the drive to Factory Default mode, the drive will be usable in Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, the drive will not be recognized in Windows XP. This is the only way to get Windows 7 Backup and Restore to work correctly.
Hi,
Could you please answer these below questions?
a) Could you please tell us exactly what are you trying to do?
b) Tell us exactly are you trying to backup or create a system image on D drive?
c) Tell us more about the issue you are facing?
d) Did you update all the necessary drivers for your computer?

I've got this problem too. When trying to create bit image to Samsung USB disk, it goes through preparing phase and when it starts creating image of C:, ends with above I/O error.
chkdsk /R on all drives found no errors.
I've got fully updated Windows 7 Professional.
Hi Pepoš,
In order to troubleshoot this issue you may try the device with another or different USB port.
You may also reinstall USB controllers and check if the issue persists.
To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps:
a. ClickStart, clickRun, typesysdm.cpl in theOpen box, and then clickOK.
b. Click theHardware tab.
c. Click theDevice Manager button.
d. ExpandUniversal Serial Bus controllers.
e. Right-click every device under theUniversal Serial Bus controllers node, and then clickUninstall to remove them one at a time.
f. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.
g. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists then you may try reinstalling the Chipset drivers on your computer and check if it fixes the issue.
To get the latest chipset drivers you may visit your motherboard manufacturer's website.

Hi Suresh,
thanks for response. I don't think it can be resolved by reinstalling drivers. I tried to create bit image to this disk on another computer (Win7 Prof.) with the same error (details below). Both computers can successfuly create bit images on WD USB disk.
Is there any way to find out what kind of I/O error it is? Error details from the event log:
Suresh,
Obviously MS does not have a fix for this problem. If you do some research, you will find many users have a problem with the Backup & Restore utility. I'm doing a new build right now with Win7x64 and 7 brand new WDC hard drives. All have been initialized with Win7. I have tried doing the backup to each drive, re-partioning, re-formatting and then again trying the backup. I have ran CHKDSK /R and other actions on all drives such as disabling all non-MS startup's as suggested in other threads. Fireawalls and AV programs have been turned off and turned back on and I get the same results.
The backup may or may not work and it's about a 50/50 chance that it will fail with an error code of 0X8078007D, 0X80780017, or 0X8078012D.
I really doubt the 6 hard drives that I have tried backing up to or the 3 new WDC Raptor drives (non-RAID) I used to test with are bad or that any of my SATA ports are flaky. I can run disc tests all day without an error (Seagate diags on WDC drives). A word here about WDC's latest disk diagnostic under Win7x64. The diag has known problems and most likely will fail generating a cable fault. If it does start, it will fail at the end telling you there are bad clusters (error code 8) or other flaky things will happen. WDC Tech Support is well aware of the problems but do not have a fix as of June 2010. You can run the Seagate disk diags to verify your WDC drives.
So after much testing and hair pulling and reading everyone's best guess - I purchased a copy of Acronis True Image Home 2010 PC Backup & Recovery software to try. From what I've read, others are having success using it - and some are having other issues but on par, it appears to mostly work. I have not installed it yet. I was looking here one last time before I pull the plug on the MS Backup utility.
Best answer I can sum up with is: If it works for you - great. Use it but test the restore function also. If it doesn't work, don't waste your time trying to find the magic bullet right yet. Eventually they will solve the problem but for now, try something else. I'm also rebuilding my WHS server, so that will eventually become my final solution when I get all the harware updated. I'll post an update about the Acronis Backup & Recovery software in a few days.
When you try to perform a full backup on a Windows Vista-based computer, you may receive the following error messages before the backup of the first drive is complete:
Hi technocrate,
I perform backup to USB hard drive, not CD/DVD.
This error occurs on the very begining of the backup process, not at the end. So it doesn't match the symptoms described in KB952272.
Hello,
I've got the same problem.
Want to make a back-up from my C-drive to a Samsung S1 mini (120GB).
First part seems to go right (about 57% of the total backup), but when
the process starts at SYSTEM level it "chrashes" with eventually the
known message 0x80788002A.
Also tried with another external disk, but the problem keeps the same.
Maybe there needs to be an invest in the I/O handling form the OS (Windows Vista or Windows 7) to
the device . CCW errors or problems?
Regards, Euss
I also have this problem, I think i have tried everything, like stopping processes that often writes and reads the discs, changed dics..... But still I get the I/O error that tells me to do a CHKDSK /R, which I also have done without success, I have earlier been able to do System Images about 5 times.
Please help!
