Function Keys not working properly

Hello,
 My function keys: f1-12 haven't been working properly since this morning. I have no idea what caused this. I've updated windows updates and restarted my laptop. I am using an hp pavilion dm4 with Windows 7. I want to use my f keys to adjust brightness and sound, but they do not work by simply hitting them, for some reason I have to simultaneously press the "fn" key and then adjust brightness, sound, or music. Please help. Thank you.

Problem solved!  Go to this link:

and follow the instructions.  It shows you how to switch the setting so that, for example, instead of hitting F11 by itself to toggle mute on/off, and using <Fn>F11 to toggle between full and standard screen browser window, you have to use <Fn>F11 to toggle mute on/off, and hitting the F11 key by itself will toggle between full/standard window size.
