Windows 7 - No Internet Access

On an irregular basis, my Windows 7 laptop, for no apparent reason, stops connecting to the internet. It will connect to my router and gives my router name in the Network and Sharing Center but says No Internet Access.

I have two other computers connected to the same router that are still connected to the internet. It's just my Windows 7 laptop. They are all connected by wire - not wireless.

Is there any way to stop this from happening? It's doing it every couple days now and there's no rhyme or reason that I can figure (much like most Windows problems). It only started a month or so ago and has been happening more and more frequently.

The only solution that I've found that works is to restart my computer and router. This seems ridiculous since my other computers still have internet connectivity.

Have you updated your system drivers (motherboard/Lan etc) from windows update, by mistake. and not from your laptop maker?

Hi Hannover,

What is the exact and complete error message you get?

This issue might occur if your network administrator blocks the access to the external wireless networks or if the Wireless network card drivers are not updated. I would suggest you to try all the steps from the following link:

Why can't I connect to the Internet?

Hope this helps!

This is most probably a driver issue try updating the drivers directly from the laptop's manufacturer web site. Sometimes windows do provide generic adapter drivers which might create compatibility issue. I suggest you un-install the adapter drivers and manually install them.

David

There is no error message that pops up.

The internet just stops working.

I am not connected wirelessly at work or at home. It's not a driver problem since I can usually connect and just stops working occasionally.

The Network and Sharing icon in the System Tray says the name of my network and below that says No Internet Access (in Italics).

The Network and Sharing page (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center) shows me connected to my network (a line with no X over it from my computer to my network) but there's now an X on the line that goes from my network to Internet. If you go to your Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center and your network doesn't have the Network icon in the middle, press F1 for Help - the help will show an example picture (without the red X).

Restarting my computer and the router does work, but I shouldn't have to just because this one stupid Windows 7 computer has problems.

It's a corporate computer - we do not install anything without our IT team testing and deploying it. None of the other users are having this issue. Our IT guy has given up trying to figure out what the problem is - he says everything is working correctly (and yet...).

Hi Hi Hannover,

Which antivirus program is installed on the computer?

I would suggest you to run the following troubleshooter from the following link:

Using the Network troubleshooter in Windows 7

Hope this helps!

Hey guys I'm having a problem setting up an Ad-Hoc network as it seems that microsoft has disabled that feature on windows 8. I already posted my question but I need to find a solution quickly. Can anybody help me with this??

We use McAfee AV.

I've tried using the Network Troubleshooter, but like most troubleshooters. it's useless. I think it usually ends up on a generic Help page that says to restart everything (computer, router, the internet...).

Unfortunately, Windows (and Office) Help isn't as helpful as it was 10 years ago (you'd think it would be better not worse).

Hi Hannover,

I would suggest you to boot the computer into safe mode with networking and check if the issue persists. Safe mode with networking Starts Windows in safe mode and includes the network drivers and services needed to access the Internet or other computers on your network.

Advanced startup options (including safe mode)

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

If the issue is fixed in safe mode with networking, then I would suggest you to perform clean boot and remove the program that is causing the issue.
How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Follow How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot from article KB929135 to reset the computer to normal mode.

Hope this helps!
