Question

Win 7 keeps asking for network user ID and Password

I am having a problem connecting to a shared printer and a shared drive on an XP Profession SP2 computer. My Win 7 machines keep asking for network ID and password, which I have never created. I have read and tried every suggestion from this old thread to no avail:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/windows-7-asks-enter-network-password-when/2a8e6d6f-74a1-43c7-8530-24e8522ea955

Here is what I have:

- All my machines are on the same workgroup. All Win 7 machines are not in a homegroup.
- Laptop 1: Win 7 Home Premium with password required network sharing turned off
Laptop 2: Win 7 Home Premium with password required network sharing turned off
Laptop 3: Win XP Pro SP2 with simple file and printer sharing enabled and has a printer and a USB hard drive attached
Laptop 4: Win XP Pro SP2 with simple file and printer sharing enabled and has a shared folder enabled

When Win 7 Laptop 1 or Laptop 2 tries to access Laptop 3 (XP pro), the screen that asks for network ID and password always come up and I don't have any password created, but either one of these two Win 7 machines has no problem accessing Laptop 4, which also runs XP Pro. The two XP machines have no problem accessing each other or the Win 7 machines,  and the two Win 7 machines have no problem accessing each other.  I see all four computers on my Win 7 network map. I know that someone may tend to think the problem is on the XP side, but I have looked everywhere on my XP machine, including those Local Policy settings under Administrative Tools, firewall setting, date and time, etc. Both XP machines don't have any anti-virus software installed. They are old and have almost nothing installed except the XP operating system and laptop device drivers.

One thing I notice is that when I double click the Laptop 3 icon shown on my Win 7 network map, the ID and password prompt screen comes up right the way. I can only say - It feels like the problem is in my Win 7 machine. If I double click the Laptop 4 icon, I can feel about a second delay and all the shared folders pop up.

I think I have pretty much looked every obvious place that I can possibly look. Any more suggestions? The reason I want to get Laptop 3 going is that Laptop 3 is relatively newer and faster than Laptop 4 and I want to retired Laptop 4 eventually. TIA.

OK, after a few days of puzzling, I found the problem and it was indeed ... so easy. Here is what I missed - On the laptop that I was having problem (Laptop 3), which runs Win XP Professional v2002 SP2, there is an option called "Network ID" under My Computer's Properties (right click My Comuter), on the Computer Name tab. Once you click Network ID, go through the setup wizard and choose "This computer is for home use and is not part of a business network", restart the machine. Now Win 7 does not ask for network ID and password any more.

Hi,

Have you tried to enter that ID and Password as the exact same as when you tries to get online.

Or I would suggest you to try using the login information when you uses while logging into the XP computers.

Vinod N,
Thanks for looking into my problem. Well, my XP machines don't have any passwords, nor do they have any user accounts. Just one admin account for each machine when the OS was installed and no password was ever created.

The problem only occurs when going from Win 7 to XP. Win 7 to Win 7, XP to XP, or even XP -> Win 7 are all okay.

By the way, the password that Win 7 asks is the "network password". If I read it correctly,  it doesn't seem asking for the password of the Win XP machine.

I think your solution might be the answer to my problem. The issue is, when I click the option to change it to home, then restart my computer. It reverts it back as if I never changed it. Any thoughts?
