Question

What is Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

After installing Windows 7 on a HP Notebook I have a network adapter called "Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter", I have been searching for information on this and I know what it's for, but I can't find any information about how to set it up or get it working. Strange if a new function like this is not documented any where :-) Some one know where Microsoft expain the use of this adapter?

Hi All,

Currently this feature is a development platform that exists only for application developers. Since this is a development platform any support would need to go through the application developer.

Here is a link to information regarding this platform on the Microsoft MSDN site:

Hi Brochs,

Thanks for posting. Virtual Wi-Fi is going to be a requirement for WLAN drivers sporting the Windows 7 certification logo, so drivers will be coming to add support for the feature.

Hope this helps!

Hi, thank you for your answer, but it did not quite answer my question. The "problem" is that I have a NIC like the one you mention, Intel 5300AGN, and I guess the drivers already support this feature. What I am can't figure out is how to use it. I see the Virtual Wifi adapter is installed and active on my computer, but how can I use / set it up. I can't connect it to WLans as this is not an option anywhere, and I don't understand how to use it to set up an adhoc network to let people connect over Virtual Wifi to my WLan connection.

I'm excited about the possibility of using the Virtual WiFi, but in the meantime, it is generating Event ID 1001 errors in my event viewer.  It states:

"Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x00242B2A34E8.  The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server."

I verified that the network address corresponds with the virtual WiFi adapter.
Does anyone know how I can stop these errors?
Thanks!

I'm a novice user but it sounds like MS just putting ____ on my computer to control how I use it.  Just bought a laptop with windows 7 and it is bad that way, I can't setup anything the way I want it without alot of hassle, that is all ive been doing in my spare time for two weeks now.  And, windows 7 is alot of mouse clicking, turning ____ off, updating...  it never stops.

im not even sure if im doing this right cause i really am new to computers and all related in genral. never posted anything before so i dont know if this is going to the right spot.  as to the problem with the virtual wifi adapter it is definitly the driver. i might even be behind in time and everyone here might already have the solution but i was able to fix the problem by downloading the atheros wifi driver. not the wireless driver the actual virtual wifi driver. installed driver then removed hardware. searched for hardware changes and reinstalled. works great and no more blue screen. from what ive found that driver not working right can mess up alot of different things that you might not notice and for an actual tech to say to just disable it is actually very sad. its there for a reason and its nice to have everything working the way its supposed. i am so new at computers its disgusting. i have very little experiance on using them let alone fixing them and i fixed this problem in a little over 2 hours. and im reading on here about techs with years of experiance and trained to work with windows that cant figure this out. you know who you are. im a mechanic. no were in my backround will you find anything stating "engineer". get your head out of your a"" and instead of just telling somone to ignore the problem, figure out how to fix it and pass on the knowledge. I really cannot beleive that ive seen this problem try to get ignored in somany different forums. maybe the so called engineers are the ones causing simple problems like this seeing how that cant even direct others how to fix a simple driver problem. good luck to everyone trying to fix this problem and if anyone needs some help on this i will try to help the best i can. just ask

new2tech: Here, Here! Yes, anytime an engineer gets asked anything, they should just stop what they're doing, and find the answer! Just tell your boss that the noob that used to be a mechanic said so, and all will be forgiven! Bosses and other work be damned! Forget that you aren't assigned to a project still under development. They are all just part of the Microsoft borg collective, right?

Just start up the Microsoft Crystal Ball program, so you can figure out that the problem that needs fixing is that the noob was getting blue screens, because no other post in this thread mentioned that! 2 posts asking how to use it, 1 other post asking about event log warnings concerning dhcp, heck, why didn't that engineer (he knows who he is, by God!) "get your head out of your ____" and clearly see he was supposed to be working on a blue screen issue that wasn't brought up before you set him straight?

So now that you told him off, why don't you get off your soapbox, and crawl back under your truck, and fix a muffler or something while having a coke and a smile, OK?

I successfully set up my laptop as a software wireless access point, and connected to it, while stll connected to my regular wireless access point, using the referenced instructions. Obviously Microsoft will need to 'GIU'ize this, and make it a more permanant type of connection, as well as virtualizing the client side. But the virtual wan miniport adapter does work for now as a sotware access point, independant of your client side access. I imagine this will be most useful as a wireless extender.

as you will mister farret. you me think what i said was directed to any one in general and as i said i wasnt sure if i was posting that in the right spot. so happens i didnt. there are many people on these forums asking about the same problem i was having and getting no result from anyone. im sorry that this particular thread dosnt say anything about this issue but maybe when some one else types there issue into google it will pop up and that bit of info will help them. as for the muffler comment. sorry dont do exhaust work in fact i work on the pilot crew at one of the big three. my job is to make sure that the new vehicals being built work. in other words i make sure all the new designs that the engineers made actually go on the car and are functional. If they are not working properly i find out why and i fix them. i dont ever say oh just dissable it no body needs it right now. how would that have worked out for the air bags in your car if some one said just dissable it till i get time to adress it. like i said im sorry i posted in the wrong spot but you should look into this issue and see how many people are having this problem. and just so you know if there was an issue i would tell my boss hey alot of people are having a problem with this. maybe we should look at it.  its not supposed to be a magic fix either. its supposed to be people helping other people. trying to help eachother solve simple problems and not pushong the problems aside. yea i might be a noob like you say but obviously i did alright figuring out the issue i had and computers is your world. do you think you could take care of issues in mine. not trying to be dick to you but i would apreciate it if you look around a bit and see how many people have the problem i did. like i said i posted that in the wrong spot and im sorry for that. meant no disrespect to any one here. coke sucks

Ah, so you're union. At an automaker, no less. No wonder you don't have any good relationships with engineer's. ;-)
