error code 800 for the vpn connection using Windows 7

What adjustments are needed to allow my VPN connection to work. I get error code 800. Windows 7. I am using Microsoft essentials. I uninstalled Norton 2010 using the windows uninstaller. It gives the message using WAN Miniport, and fails at PPTP, SSTP and LT2TP.

Error 800: The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN server might be unreachable (also got the message VPN tunnels failed). If this connection is attempting to use LT2TP/IPsec tunnel, teh security parameters for IPSec negotiation might not be configured properly.

New computer set up in the last few days. Was able to connect briefly using vpn after uninstalling Norton 2010, but after a restart of the machine, goes back to giving error message above.
