Question

Cannot access mapped NAS drive by name but can using mapped IP address. Drive also not visible in network map.

I am using Windows 7 RC on a quad core desktop with 4Gb of RAM.  This is part of a home network (workgroup) with two other computers, a printer and a Maxtor Shared Storage Plus NAS drive.  Attached to the two USB outlets of the NAS drive are another printer and a USB external hard drive.

Starting yesterday my mapping of three shares on the drive stopped working (the two attached periferals are also not available).  They are mapped as \\Drive\share . The error message on trying to access a share was "Microsoft Windows Network: The account is not authorised to log on from this station"

The three shares are all reachable from the other two (Windows XP) computers as they have always been.  I am also able to map to the three shares using the IP address of the drive (e.g. \\192.168.1.249\Public).

Based on another similar post I did the following three tests on the access to the NAS drive from the Windows 7 PC.

Ping -4 server - the NAS drive is seen and normal ping response
net view - the NAS drive is reported as one of the devises present
net view \\server - "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied"

This drive is used as my primary back-up for all my data from all three PCs and the printer is my workhorse printer so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Answer

there was a known issue for some that is fixed in RTM where this
is tied to having the Windows Live Sign In Assistant installed. Do
you have this installed? Try uninstalling it and see if this fixes
your issue.

Does your NAS have configuration menu (browser-based)?
Check for any NetBIOS settings and ensure firmware is updated.

Otherwise,
Try disabling your NIC and then re-enabling it.
And get upgraded to RTM ASAP. (lol @acronyms)

Thank you very much.  Uninstalling Windows Live Sign-In Assistant did the trick.  I shall have to purchase the RTM asap.  Thanks again
