Hello. My sound is not playing and when I go over the sound icon it has an X over it and says "No audio output device is installed." I have the latest drivers from realtek and from nvidia. I have even tried a system restore and the sound still didn't work!
I have just bought this computer and it is a windows 7 ultimate 64-bit. Could the sound card maybe have gotten loose? This is a really good computer. When I go to dxdiag it says "No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver
provided by the hardware manufacturer." Here is a log of dxdiag.

Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio - Mine says RealTek High Definition
Audio (that is an example and yours may have an entirely different name/maker).
Write down description make and model - double click on it - drivers tab - write down version. Now
Click UPdate Drivers which may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers. Then RIGHT
CLICK on it and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - this will rebuild the driver stack.
1st go to system maker's site and look for latest driver Download - SAVE - go to right click on and
RUN AS ADMIN (This is your fallback.) REBOOT after each driver installation.
NOTE : Sound drivers often rollback so check the version after installation and the reboot to
see if the version you installed is there, if not repeat the install - reboot until it is. It can take
several tries depending on how many rollbacks it does.
Also Right Click Speaker near clock - Playback Devices - right click in the box area - check
Show disable and disconnected devices. Highlight speaker and on the lower Right click
Properties check settings for Device Usage enabled and so on. Also do same for Configure
on Lower Left of that box.
In Control Panel you can also look for an Audio Manager along with the Sound Settings.

When I go to the sound in device manager, realtek high definition audio isn't there and they are the audio that I have. I already installed the latest drivers.
Even if you re-installed Windows you may still need to do those from the top down.
If nothing works then you probably need to disable the on-board sound in the BIOS
or Device Manager and use a USB sound card which is not expensive.
You should also check with Toshiba Support, their on-line documentation and
drivers, and ask in their forums about any known issues. Especially if there
is any warranty on the system. If no warranty they you could also check with
any local computer shop that does its own in-house service.
There could be a hardware issue with the sound however on a laptop it is built into
the motherboard and not a separate card. Most desktops today also have on-board
(built-in) sound.
It would take an experienced technician to check the audio/sound electronics on a
laptop.
Hope this helps.
Rob Brown - Microsoft MVP - Windows Expert - Consumer : Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right.
If I managed to open up my laptop would it be easy for me to adjust it? If not I guess I will just take it to a Toshiba service center and they can fix it.
Hey, This post been here a while, but if your still having problems. I had the same problem a month ago on MY HP Laptop.WIN7. After trying several option and not working. I came out with an idea to HOLD the
Three Microsoft Magic KEYs, that is CTRL+ALT+DELETE as the system powers up And released it just before Entering POST. And LO and behold my sound was back, happy ever after. Please if it does not work the first time try
again. I hope this helps. Thank you.
