I downloaded devcon on my Win 7 64 bit computer, but now it does not work properly

Hello,

I consulted various posts regarding devcon, but was unable to find anything that applies to the following issue:

I have a Win 7 64 bit computer (with administrator rights), and am trying to use devcon to disable and re-enable a USB port connected to a USB camera following instructions in the thread http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/1D120A90884C25AF862573A700602459. (Later, I want to implement this functionality into my LabVIEW program.)

I downloaded devcon as part of the Windows Driver Kit (WDK) 7.1.0 following the instructions on http://9b5.org/2011/10/getting-devcon-exe-onto-and-working-with-windows-7/, and several other posts that regurgitate (or originally created) the same information.

I then opened a command prompt and sent

Can somebody help me to get this to work properly? I appreciate your time and advice. Thank you.

Answer

Hi Peter

I experienced the same problem, here is what worked for me for Windows 7 and Windows 8:

Setup

  1. Download the “Windows Driver Kit (WDK) 7.1.0  from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=11800
  2. Download http://7-zip.org/
  3. Mount the WDK ISO
  4. Double click WDK\setuptools_x64fre.cab
  5. Copy _devcon.exe_00000 to a temp folder
  6. Rename _devcon.exe_00000 to devcon.exe
  7. Move devcon.exe to C:\windows\system32

Using devcon

  1. Open CMD (run as administrator) (see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272)

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Roland
