Question

HP wireless printer will not install

I recently changed internet providers and removed a wireless router. The new modem is wireless. My wireless printer would not communicate with the wireless enabled computer without being hard wired. I uninstalled printers and attempted to reinstall. Printer software will not install. A message stating that my printer is not supported by my operating system and I need to update the operating system. I upgraded to Windows 7 when it first came out. I successfully removed and reinstalled the printer on a wireless laptop running Windows XP.

Where do I go from here?

Answer

Thank you for th information.

As the first step, navigate to
http://www.hp.com/#Support
abd run the wizard to detect HP devices. See if it results in the offer of the printer drivers. If so, download and install them.

You did an upgrade from XP to 7. If this 32 or 64 bit? Was the printer working correctly wirelessly through the old wireless router setup to the computer? What computer is this? You explicitly mention an XP notebook; there is nothing about any other computer.

What make and mode printer is this? Is the network working OK otherwise? What is the make and model of the Internet gateway/router/switch? Do you know how that device is assigning addresses {manually set, by DHCP, mixed| choose one}?

The Windows 7 upgrade was installed as an UPGRADE   to my desktop (HP P6130Y 64 BIT) which was running VISTA. The computer and printer (HP OFFICEJET 6500 WIRELESS AI E709N Series) was purchased in late August 09. The printer was successfully installed on the HP 6130 and set to wireless network mode. It worked perfectly with the Desktop running Windows Vista and a laptop running XP until I changed Internet providers from Satellite to a cable supplier (Northland Cable Television-NCTV).  The NCTV modem is Arris 54g which is a wireless modem. The modem is hard wired to my HP desktop.

The HP Officejet Starter CD will not install on the HP Desktop because the Windows 7 Operating System states that it does not support it. I am prompted to upgrade my operating system. This sounds ridiculous to me as Windows 7 is as updated as a system can get.

The HP Officejet 6500 Starter CD reinstalled without a hitch on a laptop running Windows XP.

The reason I uninstalled the printer from the desktop and laptop  was because they would not function in the wireless mode. The printer always read "Off Line." Troubleshooting resulted in "Can't fix the problem" and the option to switch to online did not exist.  I should note that the printer would work when hard wired to the desktop before I uninstalled the printer software. The question remains, why can't I install the printer software on the HP Desktop? Thanks for the help. I forgot, the Internet modem works perfectly with the desktop (hard wired) and the laptop (wireless). The printer function perfectly from the laptop running XP.

Tom, you are a genius. I downloaded the basic package for my printer, extracted the files and installed the printer from that file. Everything works perfectly. I hope it doesn't take up too much room but I am going to shoe the available downloads and ask you if I should download and install the remaining files. Again, I want to thank you for sticking with me on this.

Tom,

Should I download the Full Feature Software and Driver? I do use the fax function and wonder if the fax will work with the Basic Print and Scan Driver? The other question regards should I download the HP Print Software Patch when Upgrading Vista to Windows, and the two Utility Updates: HP Officejet Software and Driver Removal Utility and Network Diagnostic Utility. I was somewhat shooting in the dark when I downloaded the Basic Print and Scan Driver. If I download the Full Feature, does it remove or add to the Basic Feature files?

The basic driver set should give you everything needed for printing and scanning. If you use the fax, check its functioning. It should work very well with the basic Windows 7 facitities.

I would operate the unit that way for a while to make sure it is OK. Also, you will quickly discover if there is anything the full HP package gave you that the basic package does not. Having evaluated that, I would back up the system and try the Full Feature package. Honestly, I have not checked in detail to see what is offers in addition to the basic package.

You can DL the Removal utility to have on hand should you have/want to remove the HP drivers. I would definately check on the HP sie to see about the Patch File.

Glad it is working out for you.
