Windows Installer Error - dllcache missing

Hi,

I'm trying to install a game (this is the only game I ever install on my laptop).

However on installation start-up it says Windows Installer Error - contact support service.

Someone on the game's forum gave me a link to here:-

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346

however when I got to the bit about the re-install of windows installer it can't find the dllcache.

To be honest most of this is going way over my head.

I haven't done anything recently to my computer.

How am I able to get this window installer fixed?

I don't want to do a system overhaul and if that was the only way will I lose all my files i.e. pictures, videos etc?

TIA

FD

Hi fd1972uk,

1. What is the exact error message that you get?
2. Does the issue occur only when you install the game?
3. Which game are you trying to install?

Method 1
Try the steps from the following link:

Error “The Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed” when installing or updating programs on Windows 7 or Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2642495

Method 2
Run SFC scan. SFC scan will replace the missing or corrupted files.

Hi,

Thanks for the response, I'll try these when I get home.

The exact error is as follows:-

Installing Football Manager 2012 when I put the install disc in and it starts I have the option to Install FM 2012, I click on that and the first thing that happens is a box comes up saying "

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."  When that is closed off a smaller box comes up saying along the lines of "Cannot run script file" or something like that.

That's as far as I get.

Hey fd1972uk,

I was researching your specific issue and found this thread here, so give it a look over and get back to me if that helped you out or what your results were. Thanks!

Well going by the last post on that link, I'm not sure it's the best course of action.

Absolute ridiculous this anyway, you need to be a bloody programmer to fix this stuff.

Everything I've tried still comes up with the same error on install.

Thanks, but that's no use.

Putting in my details (Product ID) they seem not to be interested.  Absolute joke, just trying to get a straight forward e-mail address.

I've contacted Toshiba, but expect them to say it's a Microsoft Issue, which I believe it is.

If I do a whole new recovery, will I erase all my pictures and videos or will they still remain on the hard drive?

BTW,
may i suggest you make it a habit to backup files (pics, music, etc) that you can't afford to lose.
As with most things mechanical, there are times when a full clean (format) will help your system perform better, as well as times when something beyond your control happens.
With the prices of external drives at an all time low, I suggest to everyone that they get an external to store/backup important files. That way you are free to do serious clean up on your system when needed without worrying about your files.

Yeah thanks for the tip, I do already back-up my family pictures and videos which are the only things I would hate to lose.

My laptop screen is being fixed, and I've asked a computer repair company to see if they can check it out, so I'll see what happens.
