non-empty file folder still display empty folder icon

hi, i am unzipping files to a large multilevel file structure.  as i work through this rather tedious project, i want to easily check to see if i have downloaded all my files by simply observing the folder icons as empty or filled, rather than drill into each folder to see my files.  however, the folder icons do not always change when there are files in the folder - sometimes they display as filled (with loose pages in the folder icon) but most of the time they display as empty (even if i have put multiple large files into that particular folder).  i am using windows 7 home premium.  is there a fix for this?
thanks.
