Question

Is Remember each folder's view settings functionality gone for good?

Everyone remembers this from Windows XP. You goto My Computer/Tools/Folder Options.../View and there used to be a check box for "Remember each folder's view settings"

Is it going to be incorporated into Windows 7 anytime soon?

The main reason why I like it is I want my music folder to always open as simply as possible, with just a list of bands so it ends up being a really thin long window.. it works rather well. Windows 7 has completely lost the capabilities of doing this. I really don't want to have to resort to a 3rd part app.. please tell me it's being worked on... anyone?

Answer

It's not something that's "broken", Microsoft built it this way on purpose.  So I wouldn't expect to see a "fix" for it until Windows 8 -- because they don't change features in updates, only in new versions.

If you want to voice your feedback, http://mymfe.microsoft.com/Windows%207/Feedback.aspx?formID=195

As you can see in this picture below, Microsoft made this change intentionally, so I don't believe you'll see a update to change it until the next version of Windows, because they don't change features during updates:

Default behavior. It is not possible to set Windows Explorer to remember individual folder view settings for folders included in libraries. All libraries and its included folders share the same view.

This is the NUMBER ONE most annoying "non" feature of Window 7.  Just plain stupid unless someone can explain to me otherwise.  Why on earth would anyone want a new explorer window to open right on top of another window by default?  Typically I open more that one window when I want to copy a file from one place to another.  Now every time I want to do this I have to manually drag one window to the side so I can see both.  Stupid.  Just plain vista-stupid.

And I thought it was only me - I've been asking but no one seems to have an answer.  It seems any window that uses the explorer (games, windows explorer, etc) has only one setting available to it as far as size and location are concerned.  On my Vista system, I have the games folder one size, the windows explorer almost full screen, windows update, control panel - all retain their sizes and locations... in Windows 7 (RTM and before), if I change the games folder, all subsequent window use that size.  This won't stop me from upgrading in a few weeks, but it seems like someone just forgot the code!.

Default behaviour!
The feature was available in the other windows versions and has been left out, probably for performance issues.  Repeating yourself makes you sound dumb cos your not answering the question.  The question is whether the feature is gone or will it return in an update!!!

I for one and getting quite annoyed at the omission.  I like to set things the way i want then.  I like to navigate the way i want.  It annoys me when someone removes a function that most technologically minded people use.

e.g.
My computer is top right of my screen.  I like this folder opening up just below it.
I have a NAS link on the left of the screen, i like both to open on the screen at once with out obstruction.

With this function removed i can't do it and i need to change the way i work.  I found a 3rd party Utility that does the job, so microsoft can easily implement it.
Simple question....

Why have they removed this feature?
What is the likelihood of bringing it back?

Microsoft needs to put this option back.  It's absolutely ridiculous that it was removed.  Do they honestly believe it's productive to constantly rearrange windows?  Who the heck decided it was a good idea to do this?  I have no words for the stupidity of this decision.

As of last Wednesday, Microsoft tech support (three seperate techs) were not even aware of this issue.  What were they thinking?  Also, what happened to the clean, concise, easily customizable classic start menu?

Is Microsoft working on a fix?   This problem is a deal breaker for installing Windows 7 in our shop.

So a moderator jumps on the thread and removes stupidly supposed answers, but leaves intact the reply that doesn't answer a thing. Genius! Maybe this is why people bad mouth microsoft.
All "i created windows 7" ____ really annoys me when people are asking for a feature and get ignored!

Must repeat the first question....

Remember each folder's view settings functionality gone for good? Add to this, my questions;

Is anyone at M$ working on the feature?

The word here is intact. ;)

Here's the reply I received from M$ on 11/5 from their escalation specialists.  So they are aware of this horrible exclusion.
