Question

how do you manually reset the drm media rights?

I'm running windows 7 64-bit edition. I have a zune and recently I had a really bad lighting storm the messed up my motherboard. I purchased a new one plugged it and everthing worked no problems & no software installed (dittos to windows 7 for that). However a couple of weeks later went tot sync my zune and it keeps telling me, "The media rights on your computer has encountered an error and needs to be manually reset. error code: c00d11d6 (c00d278f)." I have tried everything on zune's web site but everything isn't compatible with windows 7 or not compatible with windows media player 12. At the moment the option I'm seeing is to reinstall my operating sytem and hope for the best and I don't really want to do that. Ideas anyone...please.

I struggled with trying to fix this on my computer today.. tried everything above. Running windows 7 64 bit.

What finally worked for me was running this program http://go.microsoft.com/FWLink?LinkID=105000

Try to right click and run that program as Administrator. (If that doesnt work rename the .exe to .rar and manually extract the files to the programs folder. Then run the exe that was extracted.)

After all that I was able to load the drm reset page http://go.microsoft.com/FWLink?LinkID=34506 (be sure to use internet explorer) and all is well. Hopefully this helps someone.

To reset the DRM system on the computer, follow these steps:
  1. Verify that the Show hidden files and folders option is turned on. To do this, follow these steps:

    Windows 7
    1. Start Windows Explorer. To do this, click Start, type userinit.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    2. Click Organize, and then click Folder and Search Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. Click the option beside SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS - click Apply - click OK
  2. Locate the DRM folder on the computer. Typically, the DRM folder is located in the following location.
Note In these paths, drive represents the drive on which Windows is installed.
    Windows 7
    • Windows 7 x86-based versions
      drive:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM
    • Windows 7 x64-based versions
      drive:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM
  3. Rename the DRM folder to DRMbackup.
    1. Right-click the DRM folder, and then click Rename.
    2. Type DRMbackup, and then press ENTER.
    3. Close Windows Explorer.
  4. If you receive an “Access denied” error message when you try to rename your DRM folder, start the computer in safe mode and log in as the computer administrator. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Restart the computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured to start multiple operating systems, press the F8 key when the Boot menu appears.
    2. Select the safe mode option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  5. Reset the DRM security component. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site, and then follow the steps to upgrade the DRM security component:

Note When you access this site through Internet Explorer on a Windows 7-based computer, you may receive a "user account control" popup message that requires that you enter the administrator password to continue.
Note If you are running Windows 7 x64 and the Upgrade button on the site listed earlier in this step appears dimmed, you will have to start Internet Explorer by using an account on the computer that has Administrative privileges in order to continue.
  6. Sign in to the Zune Marketplace. Then try to play a song to verify that the issue has been resolved.
  7. Restore the setting of the Hidden files and folders option. To do this, follow these steps:
  8. Windows 7
    1. Start Windows Explorer. To do this, click Start, type userinit.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

I have the same issue as above but the solution posted does not help.   I rename the DRM folder (off \\programdata\Microsoft\DRM) with no issues as I am an admin on the local box.  I go to the link to reset DRM but teh button is inactive.  I have tried everything I can think of, restarting my machine, launching IE as Administrator, different user, safe mode, etc. no luck.

In IE, I get the following error on the page:

Debbie,

I have tried this several times on Windws 7 RTM and keep getting "THe component could not be upgraded" after the download and install.  I'm looged in as an administrator so that's not the issue.  Is there anything else I'm missing?

THanks,

Scott

Even though you are admin, you'll need to right click and select "Run as Administrator" this will allow you to run IE in full admin mode.  The "Upgrade" button will then be enabled.
