Taskbar thumbnail preview disappear too quickly to select

Original Title: Trouble with Thumbnail Previews

I have a Dell 1564.  I am operating in Windows 7.

When I hover over several thumbnails in the taskbar...they disappear too quickly for me to make a choice.  When I hover over the thumbnails, they are supposed to stay up as long as I hover over them.  They do not.

They are only up for such a brief time I cannot select any of them to open.  I cannot click on them quick enough.

I have tried shutting the laptop down

unplugging the power cord

taking out the battery

pressing the on key

putting it all back together

I have tried this several times.  But I am not able to work with the thumbnail previews.  When there are more than one preview...it does not work right.

Maybe it is IE11???

Thank you for your help.

Hello Don,

Welcome to Microsoft Community Forum.

As per the description, I understand that taskbar thumbnails preview disappear too quickly to select. You have already tried some other suggested troubleshooting steps like taking out battery and restarting the computer but that did not fix the problem.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

  • Were there any significant software or hardware changes made prior to this issue?

Let’s try to change taskbar Thumbnail Live Preview Delay Time in Registry and check if that solves the problem.

Follow the steps below to change Taskbar thumbnail live preview delay time or set it to default.

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, type regedit, and press Enter.

  2. In regedit, go to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.

  3. In the right pane of Advanced, right click on the empty space, and click on New and DWORD (32-bit) Value. Type ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime and press enter.

    NOTE:
If you already have the ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime DWORD, then skip this step.

  4. In the right pane of Advanced, double click/tap on ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime to modify it.

  5. Select (dot) Decimal, type in how many milliseconds (1000 milliseconds = 1 second) you want the delay time to be, and click/tap on OK.

NOTE: 1000milliseconds may be a good delay time, but adjust the delay time to meet your needs though.

  6. Close Regedit.

  7. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply changes and check.

To restore the default taskbar thumbnail live preview delay time:

  1. In the right pane, right click on ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime, and click/tap on Delete.
