AaronSinclair_147 asked on
I have tried upgrading 3 times now, and I keep getting this same error code. I have looked around and I have still not gotten a straight forward answer on what I should do. I am trying to update from Windows 8.1.

Thank you for responding Syed, but I have updated everything, and I made sure to check with all the manufactures versions online. Is there anything else that could be causing this?

Hi Syed,

I am having the same issue. I have gone through device manager and all drivers are up to date and installed.

I am on an XMG p505 notebook.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, this does not help at all.

Drivers are up to date.

All updates are done.

I tried to upgrade about 5x with downloading and upgrading, with downloading and burning the iso-file and upgrade from that and always the same problem. Nothing is working.

I did learn a couple of things from that link that I'll mention here for those who don't read it.

1) You can't use Windows update to upgrade a version of Windows you got from an MSDN subscription--you have to get Windows 10 from MSDN in that case. That applies to me.

2) only retail store bought or preinstalled OEM licenses get the upgrade offer.

Not sure I understand why that would be, but there you have it.

Followup: Even downloading the Windows 10 ISO from MSDN and installing from dvd didn't work for me. Color me bummed. :(

I was having this issue however I found a solution, at least for myself. Recently I've upgraded my hardware in my laptop by installing a solid state drive, I have two bays for hard drives therefore I installed my original drive in second bay using ssd as my boot drive. While trying to upgrade to win 10, as soon as pc rebooted to the progress dial it immediately restarted to windows 8.1 displaying error code 80073b92-20009, after updating all of my drivers and installing all of the updates including optional ones I was getting the same error. Then I tried something different, I unlpugged my second drive from the board and booted up using only ssd drive. Repeated the update process and it went through without any issues. After windows was installed I had to install some drivers but nothing else. I now writing this from windows 10 home. Hopefully this can help others, if you don't feel comfortable getting to your drives have the professional do it for you; I'm not taking any responsibility for damage you can potentially cause to your pc.

Thanks for the info.  Did you physically unplug the second drive or just disable it via device manager?  I tried the disable route and still get error.  Just trying to avoid taking my machine apart.

I posted a similar solution on here elsewhere and in my case I unplugged  the power cable from the drive.

Yes I physically unplugged it. Since I have a laptop it was fairly simple to unplug it from the board as it's only one plug. If it's not hard drive in your case, maybe it can be something else. I read somewhere that Microsoft activates/registers windows 10 based on hardware. Perhaps this is due to some hardware you have installed, in my case it was simply hdd.
