Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. Your interest in Windows 10 is much appreciated.

Try the below methods and check:

Method 1: Run the SFC.

Follow the below steps:

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Select “Run as Administrator”.
  3. Type “sfc /scannow” without quotes and hit Enter.

Now check for the issue.

Method 2: Run the DISM Tool.

If the issue persists, I would have you run the DISM tool to check the system health and will try to restore the files.

  1. Click on 'Start'.
  2. Enter 'Command prompt' in the Search box.
  3. In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command prompt, and then tap or click 'Run as administrator'
  4. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

To close the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.

Note: The tool might take 15-20 minutes to finish running, so please do not cancel it.

Method 3:

If the issue still remains, try manually reset the Windows Updates Components once again and then reinitiate the Windows Update process.

Resetting Windows Update Components will fix corrupt Windows Update Components and help you to install the Windows Updates quickly.

Please follow the below steps to reset the Windows Updates Components:

1. Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.

2. Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                           net stop wuauserv

                           net stop cryptSvc

                           net stop bits

                           net stop msiserver

3. Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                          ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

                          ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

4. Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.

                        net start wuauserv

                        net start cryptSvc

                        net start bits

                        net start msiserver

5. Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it and then restart the computer.

6.After restarting the computer, now retry to install Windows Updates.

Annu,

I had the same problem as glzo and followed the instructions you gave to resolve the matter. I'm pleased to say that 'method 1' worked for me. The scan found a corrupt file and fixed it. I've had no problems since.

Thanks for the information.

Regards

Peter

Hi Anu,

Thanks for your help. I tried both step 1 and 2. Step 1 did not report any issues and step 2 completed successfully. However, the issue still persisted when I tried doing the Windows Update. I then restarted my laptop and the Windows Update was able to run normally again.

Many thanks.

Regards,

Steven

I have tried method 1, 2 and 3.

Windows Update still gives 0x800705b4.

This happened after I uninstalled the latest update to Windows 10 because of a problem with another app.

This helped me!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had the same exact problem and error code 0x800705b4 for two days now, and I just resolved it by the least expected simple solution, a soft reboot; it was three days since I last rebooted my system. So try that before attempting anything else.

If that doesn't work in your case, go to "services.msc" and change the "Windows Update" service type to "Automatic (Delayed Start)". I suspect there are situations where "Windows Update" locks up when it first tries to access the Internet before the connection is established when you start your system, and remains locked up until you reboot again.

If that doesn't work for you, then run Windows Update Troubleshooter as an administrator, and go from there.

If that still doesn't work, then I would follow the methods laid out above in this thread.

(This is in reply to the original post and for whoever is having the same problem.)
