The Aggressive Invasion of Windows 10

For the last several months or so, I have grown increasingly irritated with how this new version of Windows is being aggressively forced upon Microsoft customers. Initially the annoyance was mild. I would get an occasional pop-up when I booted up, I would click close, and that would be the end of it for a few days. Then it got worse. Every single time I would log in, there was the annoying ad (If I wanted adware Microsoft, I would go and download some). I did not need this from the company I trust to keep my PC running smoothly (erm...maybe trust is not the word anymore). So I found some answers to my problems. I found a utility to delete the update that caused the pop-up ad, I un-clicked the update itself. But to my dismay, after a week or so the update would eventually re-install itself anyways.

So this little demented ring-around-the-rosey continued for some time. I'd remove the upgrade, un-click it in the updates. I'd be happy for a little while, but eventually the invasive gremlin would rear it's ugly face again, just to be wack-a-moled back to the depths of hell from where it came.

But finally this morning Windows literally tried to force me into the download/install. A big window popped up this time taking up the whole screen. It did not present a choice of whether or not I was interested. Thankfully I could close the window. I used my utility again to remove the update, and then went to inspect Windows updates. Lo and behold Windows 10 was there in my queue of available updates. This time I decided to just turn off updates entirely. I now realize that the only way to prevent the big Win10 push by Microsoft, is through my own micromanagement. I have to personally go in, manage the updates I want and do not want, and the convenience that I once had come to appreciate from Windows has now become a chore.

So here's the rub. I do not want windows 10.... in fact, I will N-E-V-E-R want Windows 10. First off, it's invasive and frankly, Microsoft has overstepped their bounds and lost my trust. Second, I believe Microsoft has this grand vision for Windows, mobile devices, touch screens, clouds, and other abominable designs that I neither share in nor desire. Perhaps most people do, but I do not. I'd rather rock a copy of Windows 7 on my big over-sized custom built desktop (with a mouse and KB), and leave the new fangled devices and operating systems to the kids and the hipsters. I am not alone on this, and I do not understand why Microsoft has become intolerant of and unwilling to accommodate us. In fact, after I am finished with my rant here, I am going to look into what it will take to make the big move over to Linux, which seems like the last safe haven for people like myself.

To end this thing, I just want to ask Microsoft why they feel the need to force us into this mold fashioned by their overpaid "visionaries" in a think tank (with their collective heads floating in the Microsoft "cloud")? I'm a stubborn desktop Greybeard and I will not be assimilated into this vision they have. This big push to get us to upgrade to Windows 10 reminds me of a pushy door to door salesman who keeps trying to force their foot into my door and push their way in to give me their pitch. Just like a pushy salesman, I am forced not to trust Microsoft, and I must question their motive. Simply put, they will not get through the door.

How was this even helpful or constructive at all? In the OP there is no mentions about conspiracies or anything of the sort. I stated it is invasive, because it is. It's proven and not a "conspiracy theory".

Are you trolling or just mentally deficient? I will say this again: There was no conspiracy theory even being implied in the OP. It's basically a complaint about the direction they want to take Windows, and I questioned why they have decided to become so aggressive in the way they are attempting to force their customers into the Windows 10 upgrade. Although I believe Windows 10 has some serious issues regarding customer privacy, it was not the main thrust of my post, and I am not making any wild claims of a theoretical conspiracy involving Microsoft. I don't need useless trolling comments attempting to discredit the validity of my post. I'm being serious and I have my feet firmly planted on the ground (in reality) here.

I couldn't agree more! Well said.

Hi Galbraeth

Microsoft published an article several months ago that explains in detail about how to completely remove or completely avoid the GWX (Get Windows 10) component.

How to manage Windows 10 notification and upgrade options:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351

There are still so called 'experts' who are still publishing articles about how intrusive this components is?

No sir, you are not alone thinking invasive behavior is inappropriate even if it's more and more accepted by people who dislikes the freedom you are implicitly talking about. Linux Mint or the new version of Solus (Solus 3) are in fact alternatives you might consider is you are not a hard gamer.

I had windows 10 professional because that's what I am: a professional. Then came these forced ads in my start menu (Soda Crush Saga, Minecraft and what have you) which would not disappear even after I have uninstalled them. They would just, simply, reappear after a day or two. I decided to downgrade my whole installation, temporarily, to windows 7 ultimate in order to regain some real privacy. I wont look back soon and my dual boot with Solus 3 satisfies me totally for the moment. Thanks for your post.
