0xc7700112 - Windows 10 Update

CJ1979 asked on

Hi there

I've been happily using Windows 10 for quite a while now and all of a sudden I had an option to run an update. I did so and every time I do I get a 0xc7700112 error.

The other posts I read appear to relate to upgrading to Windows 10 but as I said previously I've been happily using Windows 10 for quite a while now.

Any words of wisdom?

Hi,

I realize that you get error 0xc7700112 while trying to install updates on Windows 10. I will try to help you with this issue.

Please answer the question to get more clarity on this issue:

  • Did you make any changes to the PC after which you are facing this issue?

Close all open windows, restart the computer once and then login to the computer again to check if you are able to install the update.

You may boot the computer in a clean boot state and check if the issue persists. A clean boot will help you determine if any 3rd party service or application is causing this issue.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow the steps under “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot” in the article to boot to normal startup.

You may run the update troubleshooter and restart the computer to check if that helps. You will be able to solve some problems by running a troubleshooter that will automatically fix some common issues with Windows Update.

After being exhorted for months, I finally tried to upgrade from Win7 to Windows 10 and after downloading for several hours, the upgrade process ended with a message saying an error occurred, I should contact  MS support and quote error number 0xc7700112.

Well, I can't figure out how to contact MS support, keep going around in circles without any information whatsoever, and don't know what the error means or how to continue the upgrade.

Maybe this message will reach someone who will tell me what to do next.

Not very impressed.

To Everyone with the 0xc7700112 error while trying to install Windows 10 upgrade:

I got around this 0xc7700112 error by downloading the install tool instead of using the upgrade assistant.  I have a couple theories as to why this worked and the upgrade assistant did not, but I will just offer this work around and hope that it works for some of you out there!

I had an option to run an update. I did so and every time I do I get a 0xc7700112 error.

FIX - 0xc7700112
Remove Windows Setup entries from the boot configuration data file
--------------------------

From an administrative command prompt (cmd > right click "Run as administrator") type this

bcdedit /enum all

You will probably see multiple sections like this:

The Windows Setup section and the Device Options sections with the description Windows Setup are left over from earlier attempts and are blocking the current installation.

If you delete these entries then the W10 refresh operation should be able to complete successfully.

Copy the identifier in the {} brackets for each of the  Windows Setup  and  Device Options, Windows Setup  sections and append it to the delete command like this:

bcdedit /delete {your-identifier}

e.g.

bcdedit /delete {cbd971bf-b7b8-4885-951a-fa03044f5d71}

Repeat as necessary for each Windows Setup entry under Device options,  you don't have to worry about any excess Windows Recovery entries.

You must reboot your machine before trying the upgrade again

Check bcdedit /enum all  to make sure the Windows Setup entries have gone, and then you can run W10 Upgrade Assistant without problem.

No luck, still getting the same error message.

No luck, still getting the same error message.

If you also have a BCD section titled Windows Setup then you will also need to delete that using it's identifier as well as the Device Options, Windows Setup sections

It will also help to delete the hidden  C:\$WINDOWS.~BT  folder  (select "show hidden files")

You must reboot the machine before trying the upgrade again.
