The stub received bad data.

Every day, with Windows 10, about 1/3 of the programs I try starting that I have shortcuts on my desktop give me an error:

The stub received bad data.

I know I am not the only one because I have seen others say the same thing like here: http://www.tenforums.com/general-discussion/12590-stub-received-bad-data-what.html

I can start the program every time on the second try, but this freaking popup and error is getting a bit annoying. What is the deal. I never had this issue on Windows 7. Is it something I can adjust to fix the issue or is it an issue with the OS?

I also ran into "The stub received bad data" issue a few days after installing the Anniversary update, and also ran into issues trying to install the KB3189866 update (which I ended up installing manually). But the "stub" issue was persistent for almost a week. SFC sometimes found and fixed corrupted files, and System Restore would work fine for a few hours before the issue started popping up again.

After further investigation into the Task Manager, I found a sneaky process/malware disguising itself as Dropbox Service (DbxSvc.exe) with the details "Windows (R) Win 7 DDK provider." Somehow it was not being detected by my Windows Defender, Spybot, and a few other tools. However, it was easily removed by ending the task and deleting it from the System32 folder.

After deleting the DbxSvc.exe file Windows is working normally without the "stub received bad data" window popping up ever again.

The only thing I can't seem to figure out is how it managed to find its way back after a week and a half. I've been keeping my eye on my task manager, and as soon as my start menu started becoming unresponsive I find DbxSvc.exe running. And I have a pretty good track record of not getting any malware.

Just wanted to share my experience and hope it helps. Check for any sneaky malware, and definitely keep an eye out for the DbxSvc.exe.

Divadkha,

That file is legitimate.  It is part of a Dropbox installation, and is digitally signed by DropBox.   This is why it's not picked up by your scanners.

Phil

Any 3rd party software that installs into the System32 folder is NOT legitimate.

Ignorant - many manufacturers install into this directory (Intel, McAfee, Toshiba, and others on my machine alone).  Regardless, DropBox is not malware, the last I checked.

Oh yes, I remember now.  That's why I only install Intel drivers and never their management tools.  Toshiba and other laptop manufacturer bloatware applications should be uninstalled.  And last I checked, McAfee is still snorting bath salts.

I'm going to stick with my original statement.  No-one should be installing software in System32.

Could you possibly post anything less helpful? I have this same problem across several different W10 desktops and laptops and your b/s generic "run sfc blah blah" is completely useless. Please, pretty please, explain why you think a corrupted/missing system files would cause a shortcut to fail to open ONCE and then open successfully thereafter (for a while). Matter of fact, don't...just stop wasting everyone's time with your canned answers.

Update -

KB3193494 appears to have fixed the issue on my computer.  Following installation and a reboot, I have yet to see the problem reappear.

This did not work for me.  I also used Windows 10 Reset PC feature and that did not help either.

Still need a solution to this.
