Android device MTP connection quit followed by INF file error on reinstall

My MTP connections no longer work - on multiple devices. Deleting the device in Device Manager and plugging it back in fails - with the message that "A service installation section in this INF is invalid"

If I try a device that was working, I get a Device Manager yellow exclamation with the message that  "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

I think a service might be missing?  Help?

HI Bruce,

Which version of Windows 10 is installed? If you have the K and KN version of Windows 10 then it does not include the Windows Media Player as MTP is a protocol associated to Windows Media Player. So if you are running this two versions of Windows 10, suggest to follow the steps from this article and check.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3099229

You can also update all the drivers from the manufacturer website and check if it helps.

Thank & Regards,

SuJata Moktan.

...Please note that the MTP connection was working just fine, prior to a sudden failure.

No, I do not have European versions of Windows 10 - it is the 64 bit Home version,

Version 10.0.10586 Build 10586

This is also MULTIPLE Android manufacture devices, all of which worked 3 weeks ago!

FOUND the culprit!

...and MTP has not worked since!

Now, Windows 10 does NOT offer any way to uninstall device driver updates!!

Here's the scoop: version 1511 of Windows 10 needs to be updated to version 1607 - which offers a driver update roll-back control in Device Manager!! See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930?utm_source=twitter#bookmark-earlier

Then block Windows automatic device driver updates!!!

FINAL Solution - with the 1607 (Anniversary Edition of Windows 10) installed (note, this might NOT be necessary, but the 'Roll Back Driver' command could be useful!!) :

  1. Delete the old device in Device Manager
  2. Re-Plug the device, and choose "Let me Select an installed driver" (You might have to use "Update Driver" to get here).
  3. Choose USB MTP Device instead of the default MTP Device

After doing that, my Android phone was fully working as an MTP device again!
