Unable to remove file properties Windows 10 Version 1511 (build 10586.3) COM Surrogate and now (build 10586.29) and (10586.104) and (10586.218)

On any file (Excel spreadsheet, Word, Photos, etc.) when I right click, properties, Details and select "Remove Properties and Personal Information", then Remove the following properties, select all, I get the following error:

File In Use

The action can't be completed because the file is open in COM Surrogate

I get the above error on multiple machines running this version of Windows 10. I have already run sfc /scannow and received no errors.

I have rolled this machine back to the prior version of Windows 10 and was able to remove properties and personal information, so it would appear to be a new issue in version 10586.3 and 10586.17 and 10586.29 as well as the latest 10586.104 ** and 10586.218

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

Method 1: Clean boot did not resolve the issue, same message.

I am the only user on this PC, therefore I didn't setup additional accounts. I might add that I have this issue on more than 1 pc running Windows 10 version build 10586.3.

Thank you for the help.

I have the same issue. I first noticed it after I updated. Then I tried a clean install with the ISO from Microsoft's site, same thing.

I have also confirmed this issue is also on any computer that I updated and or did a clean install.

Following devices I have tried:

  • MacBook Pro BootCamp update and clean install both have issue
  • Surface Pro 3 update has issue
  • HP Folio 9470m clean install has issue

Do you notice a trend here?

It seems this is a Windows 10 1511 build 10586.3 issue. Not a isolated issue.

Is Microsoft aware of this, and do we have a timeline for a fix?

Thank you,

I just downloaded the latest build and installed it on a Surface Pro 3 and same problem. So I decided to run sfc /scannow and found immediate corruption (without touching the PC or installing/uninstalling anything). So I attempted it again on another USB thumb drive, reinstalled and sfc /scannow is bad. So not sure what is going on here.

Thanks McCartSe13 for confirmation, much appreciated!

Best

I'm having the same problem since I updated my laptop to 1511. I received a cumulative update yesterday (KB3118754) but it didn't solve this issue.

Apparently a lot of users are having this problem too. I found this thread which describes the same issue.

Hello Damon,

In that case try to perform Automatic Repair in Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting. Automatic Repair scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your computer can start correctly. Download a Windows 10 ISO in DVD or USB.

  • After you boot your computer using Windows DVD or System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD". Press any key.

  • Select the correct time and Keyboard type.

  • Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.

  • Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen.

  • Click advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.

  • Select Automatic repair.

To download the Windows 10 ISO refer the link below.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Hope it helps.

Thank & Regards,

SuJata Moktan.

Windows starts just fine, therefore I did not attempt your procedure. However, just to note, I found no issues when running;

sfc/ scannow

dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth

The original issue remains.

Hello Damon,

Thank you for your response.

I appreciate your time.

I would suggest you to run Microsoft safety scanner to check and remove any virus or malware which may be causing the issue.
Refer:
Microsoft safety scanner
http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

I hope this information helps.

Thank you

The link is bad in your reply, however, I used MRT and it found no issues. Also, and this is most important:

I performed a clean install on a Surface Pro 3 and have the same issue. So this is a Microsoft problem.

What next?
