Cannot change install location of apps in Windows 10

PBlessing asked on

I cannot change the install location for apps.  Is this by design or should I be able to install them to a different drive?

The ability to do that wasn't present in the original release of Windows 10.  It got added in November of last year.

If you don't have the ability, you're either 5 months out of date, or your don't have a second valid drive to install things to.

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in Windows 10.

In Windows 10, you can now select where your new Windows apps from the Store will install and save data to by default instead of on the Windows drive.

You can select to install new Windows apps to any internal or external drive, including SD cards, USB drives, and USB flash drives. You cannot use mapped network drives, and you can only use one location at a time to save apps to. The drives will not need to be formatted to be able to use them to install and store Windows apps.

Windows 10 will only install new apps to the currently selected location. Existing apps do not get moved to the new location. If you wanted your existing apps installed to the new location as well, then you could uninstall the apps you want, and install them again to have them installed to the new location. You can lose the existing data for the app by doing this though.

Follow the steps to change the location of the apps.

  1. Open the Settings app, and click/tap on the System icon.
  2. Click/tap on Storage on the left side. On the right side under Save locations, select the drive you want New apps will save to.
  3. When finished, you can close Settings.

Note: The default location is This PC for the Windows C: drive.

Hope the information provided is helpful. Do let us know if you have any queries related to Windows, we will be happy to assist you.

Regards,

Ashish Sondhi

Did you even look at the screenshot that I posted with my issue?  I know HOW to do it.  The option to do that is greyed out.  So no I cannot "install new Windows apps to any internal or external drive, including SD cards, USB drives, and USB flash drives." I can only install them to my C Drive because the option to switch to my other drives is greyed out.

This feature is coming soon, but didn't make this initial release.  They have some more work with compatibility before an upcoming patch adds in the ability.

Is it not a bit concerning that a community member knows more about Windows 10 than an actual Microsoft employee?

Hahahahah, this is too funny.

I am also looking to change this as my storage drive has way too low storage space.

I use it mainly for just my OS and maybe 1 or 2 games that I want to have better latency with.

As such, after consideration of the OS, some system/day-to-day programs that should be installed on my C:\ I don't really have much storage space to spare.

Have you so far got any luck as to how to perform this?

Please let me know if you have!

Much appreciated.

Thank you

When do you expect the patch being released?

I can't specifically say (I honestly do not know, they haven't committed to a time, just when ready). We know publically from reporting that there are major updates due this fall and in spring, but precisely what makes the cut isn't known publically. of course you can get ideas from the insider program and test builds.
