"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Check out your drivers.  Make sure all are updated.  I scarcely remember that when on the

microsoft site they listed 2 drivers for each item and there was a difference of the two. Sorry

I'm being vague, cause I don't recall right now.  Microsoft super-tech gave me a hint and said

to go with one and not the other (think it was the 2nd choice with the smaller download).

Hope I am not hurting anybody, rather than helping with this tidbit.

I'm testing

  • Run sfc /scannow
  • Check for Windows Updates
  • Open Device Manager and update the Network Driver
  • Run all updates in the Windows Store
  • Run Windows Update again
  • Run Disk Cleanup
  • Uninstall Antivirus software
  • Delete all Temp files
  • Run "Prefetch" in the command bar and select all, then delete all
  • Restart the computer
  • Run the Windows 8.1 Update again.

This solved my issue.

Does it make any sense at all that a huge company like Microsoft has an update for their

OWN product and yet leaves it up to consumers to figure out how to get it to work??

Microsoft is everywhere - much like Apple.  An update should take what is in the original

and tweak it - not make consumers CRAZY ANGRY!!  So frustrating.

I'm very concerned if they do another update to 8.1 - which they surely will - what then?

Why is not anyone from Microsoft giving any of us answers??

I can understand computer glitches. No problem. What I CANNOT understand is the windows msg, "an error has occurred" but not explain the error so it can be fixed. Unforgivable.

CANNOT understand is the windows msg, "an error has occurred"

That's by design so people who don't want details don't get them.  You can get details if you want them.
