Windows 8.1 Keeps freezing any help?

Shanemeister93 asked on
Hi All,

I have an issue with windows 8.1 of which I would like someone to shed some light on for me.

The issue I am having is that every so often since upgrading 8.1 last night it keeps locking up on me for no apparent reason resulting in a a restart by the reset switch, and this never happened with windows 8 but it is annoying how 8.1 is now doing it.

Can anyone help? as I am seriously debating downgrading from windows 8.1 back to 8 as I don't want a system that locks up on me and is unstable all the time due to using my computer to do coursework for college and can't afford to lose any work that has not been saved.

SPECS:
MSI E350DM-E33
AMD E350 X2 @ 1.6Ghz
8GB DDR3
1TB HDD
ATI HD RADEON 6310

Yours Sincerely,
Shane

since I've done that trick I found the system has been running great. I'll repeat it here and then try to scatter it into other replies. People should be made aware of this trick. Go into Task Manager. Right click on Windows Explorer. Click "restart"... then restart your PC...  the PC will take awhile to reboot... the Windows system must be "reinstalling" or something.... this reset everything very well, for me....

It is odd that you couldn't run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth here is a link to the scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx If it doesn't work you can search Bing for Microsoft security scanner

Did it give you an error? Maybe it was typed in wrong or you weren't running command prompt as admin. You can copy from here and right click then select paste in the command prompt.

Does dism /online cleanup-image /checkhealth or dism /online cleanup-image /scanhealth run.

One of those will scan the computer for issues and report back if there is anything to fix. The other will the registry and other places to see if Windows set flags which is just its way of marking that there is an issue that needs repaired.

None will try and fix anything but they should run.

Same exact problem I'm having! Ever since I upgraded to 8.1 yesterday this has been happening.

EDIT: I also notice that when the freeze occurs for me that my mouse is responsive as normal and I can move it around the screen but my keyboard stop responding. I can click with the mouse but it doesn't do anything. The system doesn't automatically restart, I have to force a power-down or restart by physically hitting the button on my case. No errors seem to show upon restart either.

I've had Windows 8.1 installed for about a month and it's been working fine. Ever since a day or two ago though, it's been freezing when left idle for awhile. The mouse can move but nothing responds to anything.

This problem seems to me to have started after installing updates KB2884848, KB2883200, and KB2895219, although I can't be sure of this.

Specs:
Lenovo ideapad Z580
Windows 8.1 Pro
Intel i5 3210M
8GB RAM

At least I am not the only one, but in my case my mouse isn't even responsive.

Mine freezes regardless of it being idle and as I said to the guy who replied before you my mouse doesn't even respond to me moving the mouse. It is rather annoying though.

would you say that un-installing these updates would be worth a try?

I too faced similar problems, whole computer freeze with no mouse and keyboard input at all and will have to use the power button to shut down.

However, after days of diagnosing, I found the reason for the freeze, my Corsair Force 240GB SSD.

I switched it out and reinstall windows 8.1 and the freeze is gone.

Initially I though it was the GPU, Motherboard or PSU until I reach the last test, testing the hard disc.

Before this I was able to always force the freeze when running 3D Mark 11 and some games. It only took about 5 to 10 minutes to make the computer freeze so I thought it was the GPU. When the compute freezes by just browsing and doing light load stuff, I had my doubts and did all forms of diagnosing tricks found on forums and so forth.

Right now my desktop is running fine with regular hard disc. Maybe Corsair's SSD sucks or Windows 8.1 screws up some settings.

I hope this helps anyone having the same issue.

Thank you for an insight as to what may be the cause, I have done a re install and the issue seems to have gone. however I still dont know the cause but have narrowed it down to possibly being one of the drivers for my system.

Thanks,
Shane.

Mine is constantly freezing too since updating to 8.1. Control/alt/delete often will not bring upon the task manager. Am getting really frustrated, can anyone advise or is it best I uninstall and then re-install? Although I don't even know how to do that!

Is it an OEM machine or a custom build. I have found that with mine is doing a fresh install of 8 do the updates then the upgrade to 8.1 with no drIvers cleared things up for me and let windows update download the GPU drivers. As this worked for me and I think it was a driver issue in my case.

Hope thus helps

You need to get the Windows 8.1 ISO to do the clean install, or do a Windows 8 clean install and straight away upgrade to Windows 8.1.

But this will all depend on how you get the Windows 8 copy.

I've had this exact problem. I can move my mouse cursor, but nothing else is responsive. I have another thread going on this same issue it seems . . . http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-performance/system-freezes-frequently-but-pointer-moves/b1f40174-b22e-4eaa-9c31-b1539b6c4841.

My computer hasn't "frozen" since Sunday, so I'm not sure what happened as I've tried numerous things such as system restore, defrag, scannow, Dism RestoreHealth, uninstalled Norton that wasn't working correctly (using Windows Defender now), etc. I'm not willing to resinstall Windows (I don't have the ISO and don't want to pay for it) for something that seems intermittent and my computer was working just fine prior to installing Windows 8.1.
