System Freezes Frequently but Pointer Moves

GRBU2 asked on
Toshiba laptop - Windows 8.1 64 bit, 8GB RAM, Intel Core i7, 2.40GHz - bought computer w/ Windows 8 installed; all drivers updated and appear to be working.

Lately my computer freezes but the mouse pointer still moves around. This doesn't happen during startup (all is fine there) but usually when I have multiple processes running and I'm not using the computer. The last time it froze it appeared to be when maintenance was running and Outlook 2013 was doing a send and receive. I thought it might be due to the screen saver, but that doesn't seem to be the issue. CTRL ALT DEL does not work. The only thing I can do is turn the computer off by hitting the computer power button.  I've run scannow and there are no issues. The drive is optimized with 0% fragmentation.

Everything was working fine in Windows 8 and I only have noticed the freezes occurring the last couple days. I did install important update KB2901549 a couple days ago - not sure if that is the issue.  Everything else seems to be running okay and I really don't want to have to try a bunch of crazy stuff to fix this. I guess I can always not have so many processes running at the same time or put the computer into sleep if I'm not using it. It has never frozen when I have been using it - which makes me think maybe something to do with maintenance?

Thanks for your help and I see online this issue is fairly prevalent but haven't seen a fix. Hopefully Microsoft is aware.

I solved my problem by doing a complete "System Restore" reloading  8.1 and have not had a problem since. Lots of work but it worked

Hello Graingeman,

Thank you so much for your help. After turning off auto updates etc.. it still froze so I refreshed the system but selected the option where my files are kept on the computer. It has been working okay since then I'm still monitoring it's improvements. However I had to reinstall everything as well as reupdate some things. I still have automatic updates switched off.

There is no performance troubleshooter in Windows 8.1 it seems. I looked under all categories and there was nothing that said performance troubleshooter. The closest thing I saw was System Maintenance, which I ran and found no issues.

I looked in the event viewer for Saturday when most of the freezing occurred and I could only find a red error for Bonjour Service. Event ID 100, Level 2. This is what is said under "General"

Task Scheduling Error: m->NextScheduledEvent 12813

Hi,
did this issue start after you installed Windows 8.1?
Cheers,
Ben.

Yes, it started after installing 8.1. I never had this issue with Windows 8 for 6+ months.

Another thing I've noticed . . . last night I started the automatic maintenance myself and let it run without any other programs open. When it finished, I assumed the automatic maintenance had done it's thing and wouldn't do it for awhile. Well, every time I left my computer go into idle, automatic maintenance started running again and I could hear my computer working. I don't know why it needed to run again because I had just run it completely myself - so why would it need to be running again? However my computer didn't freeze last night, but I didn't run on idle very long either.

This morning I woke my computer from sleep and automatic maintenance shows it was trying to run just as I woke it up from sleep. The automatic maintenance time was maybe a minute off from the time I woke it from sleep.

I realize automatic maintenance is supposed to help our computer, but it is very intrusive and seems to almost run non-stop when computer is idle. There is very little adjustments that can be made to it too. Hope this helps and thanks for your time and anyone else's that can speak to this issue.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. In this case, I would suggest you to try these steps and check:

Method 1:

This built in troubleshooter can automatically detect and fix most of the incorrect settings and related errors. Refer to these steps to run this troubleshooter:

a)      Press Windows key +F to bring up the searchCharms bar.

b)      Select settings in the drop down menu below search and type Troubleshooting.

c)       Click on Troubleshooting and select the view alloption on the left pane.

d)      Click on Hardware and devicestroubleshooter and follow the prompts.

If the troubleshooter didn’t detect any issues, I would suggest you to check the event viewer for any error logs around the time the computer froze recently. Refer to these steps:

a)      Go to the Start Screen, type in Event Viewer. This will bring up the Event Viewer tile, Click to open the event viewer.

b)      In the left pane, expand out Windows Logs. Click on Application log and highlight the first event in the log and use your arrow keys to scroll down.

c)       Most of your event will be Information. You may see Yellow Warnings or Red Errors. If you see any red error, you can double click on it to bring it up and copy the contents in your reply.

Try these steps and let us know the results. We’d be happy to help if you need any further assistance.

Cheers,
Ben.

Thanks Bennet. I'll look into this tonight. My computer has not been freezing lately, but I haven't left it unattended for a while.

Though last night I was using my extended monitor with my laptop (and I had changed the resolution on my laptop) and when I closed my laptop I got the new BSOD once (ks.sys). It got to 100% and was saying it was trying to restart for about 10 minutes and it never did. The computer was making all sorts of noise. So I hit the power button and did the hard restart since it seemed to be stuck, had already reached 100% and the computer was running loudly for what seemed like a long time. I then retried the extended monitor again and closed my laptop again and it seemed to be okay, but I didn't adjust the resolution this time. Weird. I had some AMD scannow errors that I was able to fix with Dism RestoreHealth. So not sure if this is all related, but I figured I better include to give as much info as possible.

Over the weekend when I had the freezes I did have some red errors in the event log, so I'll check tonight and get back to you. Thanks.

I have aditional informations about this "freeze" problem.
In 3 days my laptop got freeze like 18 times.
Once it unfreeze by himself. And twice i unfreeze him when i open CD ROM. Maybe luck i dont know.

But important is, that after these 3 attempt i didnt get anymore freezes for a long time. Freezes comes back, when i turn off my laptop, and turn it on again.
