Acer Iconia w700 slow after installing Windows 8.1

Hey All,

Is anyone else having troubles with Windows 8.1 on their w700? Ever since installing the upgrade my computer has been running _sooo slowww_.

It chunks all the time. From the task manager I can see that it's the SDD is constantly reading or writing stuff. As far as I can tell, it's only the "system" that is doing it, not any software that I've installed.

Starting up and shutting down is much slower too. When I hit the Acer Power Button in the task bar I have to wait 5-10s for the options to appear. It used to be instantaneous.

The touch screen now stops working when I'm using Chrome too. Huge pain in the butt.

Anyone?

Yeah before 8.1 my w700 was running very smoothly on both balanced and powersaver mode. Now it lags heavily on both....web browsers lag, ive tried them all and the plugged in mouse is slow and unresponsive.

The only fix that has helped me manage to get by this problem is to plug it in, when it is attached to power it doesn't lag at all and runs like it should, hopefully microsoft fix this issue soon!

I tried that and to my surprise my Iconia w700 became considerably more responsive. What is that all about? Do I need to tweak the power management settings?

ok so heres the fix, mine is now responding smoothly and not lagging at all. Make sure your drivers are up to date with the latest Acer windows 8.1 drivers, then if it's still slow you need to change the power settings.

you need to go to Edit the Power Plan Settings > Change advanced power settings > Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework Settings > Low Power Mode Setting and change from enable to Application Specific or Disable.

And the answer is:

Go to Control panel

select Power option

Set  it to 'Balanced'

select 'Change options'

select 'Change advanced options'

find 'Intel dynamic platform and thermal framework settings'

click +

open Low Power Settings

disable both On Battery and Plugged in.

I rebooted and my W700 became supersonic

Experiment with some other settings too...

This fixed my issue as well.  Of course, with the power settings set the way they are the battery life is much worse.  So I now use two different power profiles depending on if I need more or less processing power.  Thanks a bunch!

After driver updates speed has improved a bit,  but browsers are still slow and mouse is lagging at page loading.
I haven't tried using the charger,  only using it from battery (charging at night time,  not carrying the charger during the day). Let's see,  maybe there will be some difference.
So it seems like because of the power saving,  8.1 reduce the performance?
There is an other thing what helps me a little,  if I close the Acer  Ring,  it looks like becomes smoother.

To solve the problem of a laggy W700, follow these steps:

power settings
balanced
change options
change Advanced options
intel dynamic platform
low power settings > disable

WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE THE OPTION: INTEL DYNAMIC PLATFORM FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

power settings
balanced
change options
change Advanced options
PCI Express > disable

the last option worked for me. The device is very Fast again
