Windows 8.1 Pro - Windows Update messed up USB 3.0 on laptop!

Hello, I have reached the end of the line concerning this issue... Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) and constant problems with USB 3.0! I have an Asus K55A notebook, Intel 7 Series/C216 Chipset, HM76 running Core i3-3110M, Intel HD 4000 iGPU.  Samsung 840 SSD 250 GB, Kingston 8 GB DDR3 (2x 4 GB) 1600 MHz Dual Channel... This is the issue... I noticed slow transfer rates on USB 3.0 ports and MAINLY that in Device Manager that EVERYTHING connected to my only 2.0 port shows ups under USB Root Hub (xHCI) located on Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller (100-Microsoft)... Also the Power Management Tab is missing from the Host controller and xHCI Root Hub... Now Asus has a program called Instant On... For fast resume times, long standby and similar hybrid sleep state... When I manually sleep my notebook, after waking up Windows reinstalls USB 3.0 Drivers and uses the Intel Enhanced USB Controller (USB 2.0 Stack) even if devices are connected to 3.0 ports... and the 3.0 Stack stops working and almost always the 3.0 ports stop working all together.... Now if I RESTART my notebook everything stays the same... USB 2.0 port devices are under 3.0 stack and controller... Last month on Update Tuesday WU installed a new 3.0 Host Controller with this driver version... 6.3.9600.16459 and Date... 11/8/2013.... I did a clean UEFI install install of 8.1 and the xHCI drivers are 6.3.9600.46384.... Windows automatically updated the drivers and now my notebook won't auto-sleep.... And if I manually put it in sleep mode, the USB ports don't shut down... Also the Power tab is gone for the 3.0 controller and hub... I uninstalled Instant On and the USB Re-enumeration problem is gone but notebook won't sleep like I said and the Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1E26 has NO DEVICES UNDER IT... Even though I have something connected to the 2.0 port.... I ran USB3HWVerifierAnalyzer.exe from MUTT USB Test when sleeping my notebook and a whole bunch of errors for xHCI driver came up... I don't have MDK installed so I can't read the .etl file... But it did mention that Windows had to reset the xHCI Controller, driver or re-enumerate that device.... I checked the Host Controller bandwidth using USB Tree View... and it says that its 56 MB/s... around 480 Mbps my guess.... Also I have noticed that many of the devices under PCI Express Root Complex in their respective power management... S1-S2 are unspecified or unmapped... xHCI being among them... I ran PowerCFG /a and it says that S1-S2 aren't supported by system firmware... S3, Hybris Sleep, Hibernation and Fast Boot are supported though.... I have all the latest drivers installed from the Asus Support Site for my model... but their Windows 8 drivers... Asus hasn't released Windows 8.1 drivers aside from Graphics, Wifi and Bluetooth.... I do have Asus ATK Package installed wich has something to do with the Fn Hot-Keys and ACPI... I have la latest Intel ME 8 firmware and MEI drivers... the OEM Chipset INF also even though it's outdated from 2012... v1021... Some devices in device manager have a (-)IRQ.... Don't know if that's an issue because the Intel 3.0 is among them as well.... Please help me solve this issue!!! ASAP!!!! Thx in advance!!!

Hello! Sorry... I got a little carried away... To the point... All usb devices connected on 2.0 port show up under xHCI controller with a usb 3.0 location path... When I put my notebook to sleep the usb ports don't shut down and notebook won't sleep on its own... When I wake up my notebook the USB drivers get reinstalled and only the 2.0 port works... The 2 3.0 ports stop working all together OR devices on those ports get enumerated under the EHCI 2.0 controller... I also am missing Power Management tab for the Intel 3.0 Host Controller and xHCI Root Hub...

I will give it a try, but my notebook has Intel 7 Series/C216 Chipset... Also, I tried to update manually back to the MS driver that was installed by the clean install and it gives me an error that a problem was encountered... For some reason Windows isn't letting me even downgrade to the previously installed driver... Let me try this driver you suggested and I will post back the results ok... Gimme a few minutes...

Hey! Well here's what happened... I tried with the Setup.exe and received an error that my notebook doesn't meet the minimum requirements... I also tried thru Device Manager using "Have Disk" method with no luck... Error about making sure that the driver was for a x64 machine or OS.... I had previously tried installing the other Intel drivers for my chipset with the same results... I checked System32\DriverStore\FileRepository... and I found 3 different usbxhci.inf folders, 1 with the current driver that Windows 8.1 installed version 6.3.9600.16459...  2 with a driver v6.3.9600.16405 Which matches the USB Root Hub (xHCI) driver... and 3rd folder with the original v6.3.9600.16384 driver.... I am out of ideas!!! I assume that the driver v...405 should be the one installed so that it matches up with the Root Hub driver... Any Ideas??? One other curious detail... In the Details tab for the 3.0 Host controller for Location info... It shows this:

PCIROOT(0)#PCI(1400)
ACPI(_SB_)#ACPI(PCI0)#ACPI(XHC1)
ACPI(_SB_)#ACPI(PCI0)#ACPI(XHC_) <- Shouldn't this show (XHCI2) Since I have 2 usb 3.0 ports???

I look forward to your reply.... THX!!!

Hey!

I already tried that... Doesn't meet min requirements error... BUT, The weird and possibly bad thing is that I also tried installing the original 3.0 driver that Windows installed during the clean install and I get an error as well saying that a problem occurred and that the device for that driver could not be found... I can't even install the previous driver that Windows installed to begin with!!! I don't understand why... Win 8.1 is basically forcing that new driver... It has a November 2013 driver date... The only out of place Microsoft driver on my whole machine... This is really bugging the heck out of me!!!!

*EDIT* I wanted to add a thought... Since I have an Asus... I have installed this software: Asus ATK Package... Mainly for Hotkey+Fn functions and some OSD functions... BUT, I recently read about ATK also installing dll hooks on devices and drivers... Asus also has an app named USB Charger Plus... That provides faster USB charging while powered down, asleep or hibernating to USB connected smart phones or mp3 players and such... On a USB 3.0 port... Now, Windows 8.1 Pro has that capability built in so I haven't installed that Asus app... I also checked installation dates since the clean windows install... Dec 31, 2013... Windows deleted the stock USB 3.0 driver on Jan 4, 2014 and installed the weird updated driver... And that's when Windows USB stack messed up...

Hi,

Try to install the driver in compatibility mode and check the status. Compatibility mode runs the using settings from a previous version of Windows.

Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/older-programs-compatible-version-windows

Thank you.

Hello!!! I have an update... Last night I was doing some routine cleaning of my laptop, I removed the under cover that houses the SSD and RAM... as I was spraying some compressed air around the Atheros Wireless Adapter... I noticed just behind it... a little bit hidden was an Asmedia ASM 1042 Chip!!!! All of a sudden I remembered that when I was using Win 7 a while back that I had downloaded Asmedia AND Intel  USB 3.0 drivers from the Asus® Support Site!!!! Now the real question is WHY Win 8.1 doesn't even detect the Asmedia USB 3.0 Host Controller Hardware?!?!?!?! Maybe that's the root of my issue!!! And why I'm having so many USB 3.0 problems!!! Any idea how to fix this???
