How can I get Freelancer to work in Windows 10?

It works fine in Windows 8.1.  I just looked, and it doesn't look like I had to make any compatibility changes to get it to work.  However, last night I upgraded to Windows 10 and Freelancer didn't work afterward.

I tried reinstalling Freelancer.  No change.

I tried the compatibility wizard in Windows 10, and I tried several different manual settings such as Windows 7 compat.  I'm starting it as Admin.  Freelancer starts but quits before any graphics come up.  I don't see any event log entries.

I thought at first it was because of a driver problem with the GeForce GT 740M on my Toshiba Satellite S55, however, I rolled back to Win8.1 and was able to play again.  After playing I noticed I have the same driver issue in 8.1.  (I rolled back the driver in 8.1 and now it is ok.  No yellow triangle.  But that wasn't an option in windows 10.)   But anyway, I believe in 8.1 I was playing fine even with the driver issue.

I'm back on 8.1 but I want to re-try Windows 10 shortly.  I'm sure the driver issue will be fixed soon.

I got relevant event log entries, both related to SecDrv, which is I believe the anti-pirating solution used by Freelancer.

Log entry 1:

Log entry type 2:

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
\??\C:\WINDOWS\SysWow64\drivers\SECDRV.SYS
the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

It may be that the driver is not compatible with Windows 10.

That is correct Windows 10 does not read the SECDRV.sys file for any game that is loaded from disc. They probably figured that everyone would download their games online, I dunno but this is what a lot of other people are saying and we are hoping that Microsoft will fix this asap. Otherwise the only option is to buy the game online and download it. Therefore eliminating the need for an optical drive.

Thank you; this explains it.  Hoping for a solution from Microsoft!  Waiting on upgrade until then.

Another thought -- secdrv.sys isn't signed, so Windows 10 is probably refusing to load it (it may be that it is stricter that Windows 8 in that regard.)

If you go to Settings>Update & Security > Recovery, and click on advanced startup, you should be able to find a way to turn off driver signature checking.

!!!WARNING!!! -- if you do that, you are opening yourself to be totally owned by rootkits (practically the worst form of malware).

It would be much better if MSFT provided a signed version of secdrv.sys.

just download a no cd crack for the game from here http://the-starport.net/freelancer/download/singlefile.php?cid=1&lid=2649 i am running windows 10 myself, and have run into this problem. After installing it wouldnt even load up in task manager. read about it not registering the serv file at boot up, so just replace your exe file with the one provided. norton antivirus has checked it for me and found nothing wrong with it

Downloading no cd cracks is the only solution up to now... and probably for ever.

I got Freelancer to work on Windows 10 64 Bit. I ran compatability mode Windows XP and run as administrator. I downloaded the NO-CD .exe from:

http://the-starport.net/freelancer/download/singlefile.php?cid=1&lid=2649

Then installed FL1.1 patch.

I just got it working with Halanious' solution on Windows 10. Everything was installed in the default location for me, these were the below steps I took after downloading the freelancer.exe file from the link he posted:

1) Open up finder

2) Go to '/c/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Games/Freelancer/EXE'

3) Simply drag the new freelancer.exe file into the folder, replacing the one that is already there

4) enjoy

:)
