Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) fails to install with "Code 800700E", stating this is an 'unknown error'

One symptom, with task manager on, is that memory usage sits at about 1.44 GB for quite awhile, then it goes to 90% or more just before giving the failed message. CPU usage is always low, I think never over 50% except for very short periods of time.

Oh, and now I get a message saying my windows isn't genuine, as I'm looking at my PC and Microsoft CD that has been genuine for quite some time before this failed update.

So, how do I get Service Pack 1 to install on my Sony Vaio Laptop?
