Multiple programs keep crashing...Windows 7, 64-bit

Hello,

I'm hoping someone out there can help me.  First let me just start by saying, I am fairly non-technical, so I'd appreciate simple answers only, because those are the only ones I'll be able to follow-through on.

I've had multiple programs crashing since April - namely Powerpoint (reinstalled 2x - working), Adobe Premium & Reader (reinstalled 2x - will work if I reinstall again, but I don't feel like it), HP software (reinstalled 4x - scanner just refuses to work).  Now the system is slowing to a crawl every time I try to stream a video on Netflix or Hulu, or play a game.  This happens on both Chrome and Firefox.

I've been reading up on Registry Cleaners, and apparently they don't work, but I still need to know what to do.

My computer has been scanned to death, and there are supposedly no problems. I've already taken it in to be repaired once, and they said I had a bunch of viruses, and they removed them, and then they told me if I started to have problems again I should download Kaspersky. Which I did, and according to Kaspersky there were no viruses. Also a malwarebytes scan came up with zip too.

Thoughts?  I don't want to pay to have my computer "fixed" again, if they can't find anything wrong with it, so is it time to just wipe it an start again?

Answer

Hello Sabrina11,

Often we see crashes as the result of a program loading on startup.

To resolve these, we use clean boot troubleshooting.

The following article describes this process:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
