Auto-adjusting brightness

ALF-ENG asked on
Hello.

On my Surface Pro 2 there's a switch called "Brightness" at the top of the "PC and Devices | Power and Sleep" menu.  I've turned if off, but my screen brightness still auto-adjusts every time I switch from metro to desktop (other times too but that's the one I notice the most).

Is there some other setting in Control Panel or somewhere that must also be set in order to fully turn off brightness auto-adjusting?

Thx,
ALF

Greetings AVPR,

Sorry to hear about your experience. Have you tried to turn off the Automatic Brightness? You can check for here:
1. Swipe from the right
2. Touch Settings
3. Touch Change PC Settings
4. Touch PC and devices
5. Touch Power and sleep
6. Slide off on the Adjust my screen brightness automatically

Alternatively, you can do the following:
1. Swipe from the right
2. Touch Settings
3. Touch Screen in the bottom right
4. Slide the bar up or down as needed.

Hi Maxx7,

Sorry to hear about your issue with the display on your Surface Pro 2 flickering. One of the things I would suggest is to go under your Advanced Power Settings, select Display and then Enable Adaptive Brightness. Make sure both are set to On. If this does not resolve your issue. I would suggest contacting the Surface Technical Support team.

Let me know if this works or not for you.

Thank you for posting,
Tony

The adaptive brightness setting can be found under Power Options and it will likely differ depending on the Power Plan you're currently using and whether you're plugged in or running on battery.

Just in case you're unfamiliar with the Windows OS, I'll provide full steps below to check this setting (although, please note, I don't have my SP2 in front of me at this very moment).

From the desktop, select the battery icon (in the taskbars notification area, by the clock), and click on More power options.

You should the see the Power Options page. Locate the plan that you're currently using (identified by the radio button that is selected) and click on Change plan settings. Then, on the next page, select Change advanced power settings.

In the Advanced settings box, scroll down the list and expand the Display heading. You should then find an option relating to the auto-brightness/adaptive brightness. This feature can then be turned off.

Thanks!  It was helpful to find the settings in control panel.  I knew they'd be different than the ones in "Change PC Settings".  Unfortunately it didn't fix the behavior.

I've verified that in both places, the "auto adjust" feature is turned off.  Moreover, I ensured the "bright" and "dim" values were the same in case the flag was being ignored.

But to no avail.  Switching apps and especially switching environments still kicks in an annoying screen brightness adjustment.  Because it's none in chunky increments rather than smoothly, it flickers when doing it and that's the annoying part.

Sure hope they fix this and the touch-pad soon...

Cheers,

ALF

Oh, that's disappointing. I was hoping that would solve your problem.

I have seen similar reports from other individuals advising they have a very similar problem, with suggestions that it could be a problem with the video/graphics driver that will most likely be resolved with a future update.

I can't, however, report that I've experienced this problem.

You are lucky...I have a brand new surface pro 2 128 and after only about 3 hours of usage my brightness began flickering.  If I cannot fix this I will definitely return it as it is beyond annoying...especially when I use this strictly for painting on Corel Painter.

Surface Pro 2 display blinks or flickers very slightly, when the brightness is set to 100 % and it is running on battery.

This can be noticed in darker background like Photoshop or vieving a black/dark image. The level of the backlight blinks about every 1 second, as if the brightness control would try to set the brightness from 100 to say 80 or 90 %.

It is very noticeable in the dark images, but not in typical web browsing.

I have disabled the auto brightness and set brightness to 100%

When I connect the charger, the problem goes away.

This is not a huge issue, but I will return the product if there is no driver/software fix. I've not had this kind of effect even in much cheaper computer, so I will not allow for that kind of problem in a >$1000 device.

I have installed all the updates.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

I am also having this issue (among others) and from what I gathered over the internet is you can fix this by downloading the Intel 4400 drivers off the intel site directly.  It should install a graphics control panel where you can turn off the dynamic power saving setting for real.  However, every subsequent windows update will probably overwrite it and you will have to install it again.

Hi,

The screen of my Surface Pro 2 constantly grows dim & brightens up again. I read that this was due to overheating, however this is happening as soon as I turn the machine on & continues even though it is not heating up. Additionally, automatic updates were installed over the weekend, with no resolution to the issue.

Any ideas or can I assume that my Surface is faulty?

Thanks
