Civilization 5 keyboard problems

JaiZ asked on

Hi, I'm not sure if this is a problem from the game side, or from my Surface itself, but after playing Civilization 5 for sometime, I lose the ability to type any text. Both my cover keyboard and on screen keyboard stop working. Oddly enough the cover mouse pad continues to work.

Additionally, the problem continues even after I exit the game, and so far I have only been able to fix this through restarting.

I would like to get this resolved, and thought I might start here to get some advice.

Thanks,

Jason

Greetings JaiZ,

How long are you playing before this happens? Which Cover are you using? Is your Surface Pro on Windows 8 or have you taken the upgrade to Windows 8.1? Does your Surface have all Windows Updates installed?

Also, how did you load Civilization 5 onto your Surface?

Hi Steven,

I've been having the exact same issue as JiaZ on my surface pro 2 (with type cover 2).  It usually happens within 30 minutes of play-time.  It also happens to my brother who owns a surface pro (with original type cover).  Both of us have windows 8.1 and I believe we both have fully updated systems.

I should note, this seems like a recent issue.  I've played plenty of Civ 5 on my surface the past several months and only in the past couple weeks has this become an issue.  I'm thinking it must be related to a recent update.

Also, the keyboards do work but the buttons are a bit jumbled (for instance the escape key brings up the start menu).  I've also been able to fix it temporarily by button mashing the keyboard.  I know that's not specific, I roll my hand across the keyboard pressing buttons until it comes back.  There's some input while button mashing that breaks it out of the spell, but I haven't had any luck finding the specific button/buttons to press to get the keyboard working again.

Thanks,

Colin

Thanks for the replies,

I am on a Surface Pro I with fully updated 8.1 and I am using a type cover. I downloaded the game via steam and have been experiencing it since I got it, which is roughly the beginning of December.

My experience sounds exactly like Colin's, but I either haven't discovered the button mashing technique or that doesn't work for me - I'm not sure. I can confirm what he is saying about buttons working on strange ways however, like the escape button as he mentioned.

I hope there is a solution for this, because otherwise the touch screen gameplay is great.

Thanks for the help,

Jason

Greetings,

When you experience the issue, does removing the cover and reattaching help? Also, roughly how long are you playing before the issue occurs?

Steven, reattaching the over does not help, and i'm not that confident about the time, but maybe 15-30 minutes.

Also, I should note that once I exit the game typing still does not work, and this includes trying to use the on screen keyboard. It is a big problem especially when the screen lock comes on and I can't enter my password and must reboot.

Just wanted to chime in and add that I am also having this issue with my recently purchased surface pro 2 and Civ V. I've mostly been playing without a type cover attached and get the same results after playing the game for a while on the touch screen mode of the game (haven't tried the others)

One thing I think I can add is that it seems to behave as if the ctrl key is being continuously pressed. for instance, if you highlight text and press the letter 'c', then go to a text field and press the letter 'v' (with no modifiers), it pastes the text.

I haven't found a solution to thjs besides restarting.

Greetings Slowprod,

When this happens, does your On-screen keyboard show anything being highlighted? Does pressing the Ctrl key on the On-screen keyboard help? Also, is this the only game you see this issue with?
